Right, I've just done a search and nothings come up so thought I would start this topic. I'm considering welding my diff on the S13, and I'm just after some advice of what, if anything, else should be replaced/checked. I know that I need to check, and possibly replace, the rear mounts/bushes. And I also read about Locking collars. Also, what are the effects of having a welded diff on the car. Do's, don't's, etc? mhmm i dunno if its road legal over there for a lock but id heard about putting rubber shards in a diff so that when it heats up it locks up and when its cold its just open but theres porb a reason why people don't do more of it
A welded diff will obviously put more strain on certain components in the drive train, would be worth checking things like subframe mounts for excess slop and bear in mind it will develop more of an appetite for rubber on the back... As for do's and dont's of a welder, there aren't raelly any.. can be a bit of a headturner at slow speeds and parking, but i find that under normal "spirited" road use mine gives better drive out of the corners compared to an open diff.. unless it's just me!? just be prepared for the sterring to feel maybe a little bit heavier until you get used to it, and the self centering action will be a lot more pronounced
mate, just weld it up. rubber shards?? wtf dont play about like that just weld it or shim it up. i used a welder in my daily for a goof half a year before i sold it for my next car. it was a 99 s14a and other than it skiping the inside wheel and shaking the car with stiff suspension when on full lock going slowly, it was completely fine. didnt change anything else, didnt look at replacing anything else. just replace what breaks if it even does. "if it aint broke dont fix it"
welded diff is only for drift and drag strip...when the car steers the wheels rotate at different speeds...with a welded diff it will force them to move at the same speed, *cking up tires and suspension...i would not recommend at all(and as for safety is pretty dangerous for daily driving...that's why is also illegal)

What your saying is true. However its not a serious as you make out. i drive mine daily with a welded diff. Just take it easy in the wet and youll be fine. It definatly promted understeer in the car espically in the wet when driving, the fixed rear wheels try to force the front wheels in a straight line even when your turning! However massive fun in the rain if your intending to go sideways, obviously not just the rain however rain = cheap skid. Miniumal tyre wear.
Every other thread ended with "Man up and just do it". It's not illegal, it will make a bit of noise at slow speed (so do LSDs anyway), it will wear tyres (but you're welding with intent to skid, tyre wear isn't an argument, you're in the wrong sport if you think it is) and other transmission components a bit quicker, it will understeer but it'll also drift better. Pros: Drifting Cons: Noise... if you even care about that.
