Have you looked at the towing capacity for them, as the trailer plated weight is what legally counts, (so to even tow an empty 3.5t trailer that probably weighs 700kg, you need a vehicle with a towing capacity of 3500kg). As for economy, the discovery is supposed to be crap, Jeep is better but I seem to remember reading they were a bit of a donkey! I've looked into both before but got put off for various reasons. Yes jeep can tow upto 2500kg so no problem there Ps I'm doin my trailer test in a week so weight 3.5t don't matter
I would recommend the landrover simply becase there so much cheaper to repair than the jeeps also the jeep td is prone to head gasket issuses, 4 heads to have skimed to!!
I have had a frontera and that was pretty good to be fair My best tow vehicle was a 6.2 diesel Chevy pick up could tow the world and fit 34 wheels in the back
Thats not what I mean, even with a trailer test, if you want to tow a 3.5t trailer you won't be able to, (legally), with the Jeep. I don't know what the gross weight of your trailer is so may be irrelevent. Alex B
Dan lol bit much for me From my research Disco cons are; When rust comes there good for scrap Slow as fuk Juicy Jeep; Weak heads Weak inj's BUT as with any 4x4 heads seem to be weak like shogun and pajero 2.5's I had an exceed paj 2.8 and amazing but juicy Dan, funnily I was also considering frontera 2.2dti but know nothing about them
i had the 2.8tdi and it worked well had full leather etc there are some cheap mazda b220 pick up on ebay and warriors etc
Our best has been a 1978 GMC sierra, with full size crew cab, full size bed and 454ci V8. Could seat eight, carry anything in the back and still cruise at 80+, (speedo needle had a fault and fell to the bottom at 82mph), with whatever you wanted to connect to the towbar! Unfortunately as it's got to be a daily, 7.4ltr V8 and 21' long is a drawback! Alex B
I'm confused. I don't have a trailer yet but either way it will be 500-750kg for one even if I rent. Then add the car 1.3-1.5t would = 2.5t in a worst case scenario So where is this 3.5t coming into it. I know without a license the rule and with a rigid truck transit etc 3.5t so I don't get what your referring to??
The Jeep will drive you crackers, they are positively agricultural to drive in comparison with the Discos IMHO. My mum has a Cherokee, I have a Disco, both are '03. The Jeep is cheaper and nastier, no question.
As I said, it's the plated weight, as in, the max weight the trailer can weigh, loaded, what it actually weighs when attached to the back of your car is irrelevent. For example, we have a plant trailer that weighs 700kg, but with a plated weight of 3.5t, (so I can put a 2.8t load on it), but I can't legally tow it empty behind my Volvo, even though I have a towing capacity of 1.5t. this was my one would do 30mpg used it daily just took up x2 spaces in carparks lol but was red neck as hell and sounded insane wish i had never sold it

basically each vehicle has a legal towing weight that it can tow that has to be above the weight of the trailer + Car + anything extra you put on the trailer spares etc
Think I get it.. Most trailers I've seen have a loading weight of 2t so that should be fine for what I want correct?
its not the trailer its the towing vehicle, the towing vehicle will have a plate with the towing weights on normally a braked trailer weight and a non braked trailer weight
If it's got a gross, (Plated weight), of below the tow vehicles max tow weight, (Max Allowable Mass), then yes you're laughing! Alex B
It's both, the trailers plated weight has to be below the car's max tow weight. Staying legal while towing is a minefield. The other thing you need to be aware of, is if you are towing for hire or reward, (and prize money is classed as reward), and the unit weight is over 3.5t, you need an operators licence, tacho and all the crap that goes with it. So just make sure you're not! Alex B
