Figured i'd make thread to start showing everyone what I'm up to. (If anyone really cares. That is. lol) Background: My name is Anthony, I'm 22...sharing the same love that we all do. (Cars) -Since I knew what a car was, I've always wanted to own a BMW. I just like the way they look, the build quality, and how they perform. A E36 seemed to be the perfect fit for me. Some quick details on the car and history: -The car is a 1996 BMW 328is. Bought it with 225,xxx miles for $3600 USD. Car came completely bone stock with nothing but a M50 intake manifold swap. Car was very well taken care of and in immaculate condition aside from some rock chips on the hood and front bumper. The plan: -I bought the car with the intent to drift it.. Of course. I wanted a reliable setup that will make solid, usable power. The idea is to make about 400 wheel on pump gas, maybe slightly less. So, I decided I wanted to go FI. And I began collecting parts, and listing out all of what I was going to need to achieve what I wanted. Listed here are the details included in my build: -ENGINE- -Stock compression (10.2:1) -Stock bore/stroke (84mm/84mm) -Cometic .140 MLS Headgasket -ARP 2000 head studs -Stock valvetrain and cams -TURBO RELATED- -Precision Billet JB 6262 4.0" ported comp. housing. .68 A/R OS T4, 3 5/8" V-band discharge -OBX T4 Top mount style exhaust manifold -Tial 44mm MVR wastegate -Turbo oil feed to be tapped from VANOS line (-4AN) -Turbo oil return to sump (-10 AN) -CXRacing 31x12x3" front mount -Universal piping kit for charge pipes -Downpipe and Wastegate dump tubes will be custom made by Levelride Concepts here in Salem, OR. -Blow-through MAF to support the added power -3" Straight through exhaust -FUELING- -Technica Motorsports Walbro 255lph drop in kit -Stock fuel rail, FPR, fuel lines -60lb injectors -TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH- -ACT Stage 3 Unsprung 6 puck disk W/ Streetlite flywheel -Stock BMW ZF 5-speed transmission -EMS AND ENGINE CONTROL- -Stock OBDII Siemens MS41.0 DME -Tune for turbo build will be provided by Jordan @ RK-Tunes. -INTERIOR/EXTERIOR- -OMP Corsica 330mm suede steering wheel W/sparco hub -Home made shift knob (ghetto, but comfortable and nice!) -Carbon Fiber center vent gauge holder, 2x 52mm gauges -Auto Meter carbon fiber ultra-lite boost, and oil pressure gauge -SUSPENSION- -Car has bilsteins all around, with M3 springs in the rear, and Z4M springs in the front Will be getting BC coils. -Stock arms for now, will be upgraded to adjustables after engine build is done I've already started acquiring some of the parts. And I am actively buying more... Projected time period to have this done is by the end of August, 2015. I will actively update this thread as parts arrive, or changes get made to the car. Thanks for looking guys/gals! -PICTURES- When I first took the car home from the previous owner. Gave her a fresh wash job! {} Gave it a nice wax too... {} Really impressed by stock E36 steering lock. Seems to be 3 or 4 degrees more than a 240sx stock for stock. This photo isn't QUITE crank lock. {} Here's the interior shot, with guages and such all christmas tree like. Love the orange that BMW uses for their interiors. {} About 3 months ago I decided to throw on some E38 wheels... Eventually, I want to run ARC-8's 17x9 concave editions. {} Another angle of the new shoes. (Tires are Hankook Ventus HR2's 205-40-16) {} Now for some pictures of modifications that I begun doing, to make it more drift savvy. Started by welding the diff of course... Stock ratio.. (Hold your breath) 2.93 final drive. {} Gave it a fresh wax that day too. {} I recieved my wideband in late December of last year. PLX Devices Wideband. (Great product!!!) {} Wideband installed and monitoring. No calibration required... I love this thing. {} And then, I started receiving turbo parts... May not seem like much yet, but it is most definitely happening. first things first, My manifold arrived. {} {} Then, a few weeks later after I got my next check, my order from Full Race Motorsports arrived with my Wastegate! {} {} And my steering wheel came also, after a 1 1/2 month wait... (Out of stock when ordered) {} Here is the pre-steering wheel interior picture. {} And the after picture... (I know, it's fuzzy a bit) {} I've got more stuff on the way. Should be here by the middle of next week. Feel free to spark conversation! Cheers!
Nice clean E36 you have there, good to see people pumping real money into them over there rather than most people here treating them as shitters
Thanks man. I Take pride in keeping my cars clean. The idea for this car is to be a weekend fun car/drifter. But still kept nice..... for now. Until the motor gets built, car gets caged.. etc. lol
No I didn't. However, a buddy of mine utilized this turbine setup on his M52 build a year or so ago. His was TS though.. He makes much more power than I will be. (500-550) On 20 ish lbs of boost, he had full spool at around 3600 rpm. Not bad for a GT35 frame sized turbine. I've always just fancied Precision turbo's too, they produce a good product, and it's semi-affordable. Here's a link to my buddies E36:
Oh didn't know Mike had an M52 in his e36. car is a beast, have a few pictures saved in my "inspiration" folder. haha
Nice project. So, you will run your turbo set-up with the stock M52 aluminium block ? i thought they were too weak to be boosted.
I'm liking the sound of a stock management 400bhp build. Mine's only sitting at about 250bhp at a guess atm but I'd LOVE more
There is a common misunderstanding about the materials used for M52 blocks.. U.S spec M52's recieved cast iron blocks, with cast sleeves. No nikasil coating or anything. Just cast iron. All other M52's got aluminum block with either nikasil or cast iron cylinder sleeves. So I got lucky with buying a US spec 328is.
Oh of course... Haha! I'm shooting for 380 wheel. Should be achievable with this setup on about 10 lbs of boost. Nice and safe, but will still go like stink! 250 is still healthy enough to have loads of fun! Even my mostly stock N/A M52 as it sits right now holds its own quite well! - - - Updated - - - Indeed! His youtube username is "mvs36" He has a ton of videos of his car, from when it was first built, to current times. Cheers!
Just as a update, I will be ordering my turbo next week when I get paid. Can't wait to see that box at my front door step. I might need recessitation. lol
I did some talking, and measuring with AR Design. They make some badass BMW fabricated parts, and are great guys to deal with. I'll be running their M5x downpipe, and possibly having them fab my wastegate dump to atmosphere. Here's a link to the downpipe: ar design - fabrication perfected ar design BMW E36 24V M5X / S5X Top Mount Divided T4 Turbo Manifold - E36 - BMW - Select Your Vehicle This is also the same DP that Mike runs on his E36. (The car in the video above.)
Sorry for the away time! Been really busy with work and such... While you were away.., I've been dealing with a noisy water pump, after inspection I found that the bearing was dying as the pulley was wobbling pretty bad, So I ordered a brand new one from Rock Auto by UO parts. It's a metal impeller version, and not the silly plastic BS BMW decided to sabotage our motors with. Also a good time to pull out my Mishimoto, great product, car never gets warm, even in traffic with 90+ degree weather. Hell, my auxilary fan barely ever kicks on. Here is the old water pump, had about 1/8" of play in the bearing... 0.o I'll be ordering my turbine this week. I get paid thursday night, and trust me... I'll be awake and watching for funds to hit my account.
Welp, date is April 2nd, 2014.. There is a metal thing on its way that spins and creates black magic... Also, Got bored yesterday so I threw my wastegate onto my manifold. Just to see how thing would look once all mated together. Turbo should be here by thursday or friday of next week. The company I ordered mine through, (ETS) didn't have my exact needed 6262 in stock, so PTE is building it right now as we speak.
