What i have now, an E36 Compact swapped with a S50B30 an E36 ti with a S50B32 would probably be even better.... 1100kg and 300+hp, and you can't go wrong.... This is the only video of my ti, i won't be posting another one until i have done some mods to it.... but that's 3rd gear.... on 3.38 ratios... with 235 rear tires... 3rd gear will top out @ 170kmh (110mph), so i think it rolls some decent smoke at decent speed.... Paint is underway.... E36 wheelbase, good suspension, in a chassis lighter than any E30.... = WIN !!!
Pretty simply really, same reason most supercars aren't that fast compared to tuned 'normal' cars. Audi R8 V10 is 520bhp and 390lbft, is 4wd so loses at least 100bhp/100lbft with transmission losses, is geared to the moon (way beyond 200mph), and weighs about 1700kg= About 245bhp per ton and 170lbft per ton at wheels. Shitbox stripped bare MX5 pushing ~270bhp and the same in torque, weighs 1000kg tops (prob way less as it was just a shell), geared to 160mph on the limiter in 5th, and RWD means ~25bhp/25lbft transmission loss= About 245bhp per ton and 245lbft per ton at wheels. Not that fast for my liking, but still fast. If your R8 was geared down to top out at 160odd too, I'd expect it to keep up with a superbike to 160odd, but long gears kill acceleration, hence how Rallycross cars do 0-100mph in just over 4.5sec despite weighing over 1300kg. To 160 from a 30mph roll (I had no wheelspin, tarmac rally slicks), I lost by I think it was 3 lengths or so to 160 to a friend on his R1 if that helps, most of that at 140+. From a standing start though, no chance. It's nothing that special, I've had faster cars, but it was fun for what it was as it weighed cock all. I'm surprised your R8 V10 is that much slower than your bike after 100mph+ to be honest. Have you tried a side by side race?
My E36ti is insanely quick... i haven't done a 0-100 timing on it since it has problems with traction... 80-200 (kmh) happens in about 8 seconds... that's ~300hp (i'm guessing it has 310-320hp with the MAF delete + Alpha-N tuning and VNC mod) and 1100kg... so i'm guessing a 0-200 run with good traction would be somewhere in the 12 second range... maybe 13 seconds... I have a 3.38 gearing and a 5speed transmission, that will let me top out @ right above 280kmh... i higly doubt it will be any quicker with a lower gearing, since i will have to shift more often... I remember my GSX-R 1000 being about 9seconds with me on it.... from 0-200kmh... and i'm a 295 pound big guy... It won't beat any superbikes, but it will definately give them a run for their money... I refuse to beleive a 270hp MX5 will do any better... And Starvos, you forget to calculate aerodynamics into your equation...
Your E36 you think is insanely quick does 200m in 12-13sec? That's slow as fuck then to be fair. My RX7 was doing the 1/4mile (402m I think?) with no grip on the start line at all (2sec+ 60fts) in low 12s at 120mph with well under 400bhp and 1100kg+, and I would say the MX5 was prob faster. We can discuss theory all we like, but just like drifting, what happens in the real world is all that matters. I've spent the last decade or so timing and testing cars as part of my job, I'm really the last person to 'think' something is faster than it is, as fuck all impresses me, everything feels slow to me. Also, tbf, the MX5 could've been up to about 300bhp and 330lbft at the spec it was, and under 900kg, I dunno, but I'm not one for claiming BS numbers, so I say 270 as with the spec that's about minimum it would've been.
That was my first skid car.. Was just so easy.. Gave me misplaced skills that I suddenly didn't have when getting in anything else..
Ive got to say, having done a couple of drift tracks with my missuses MR2 now, Im incredibly glad I learnt to drift in a piece of shit S12 with cut springs and no handbrake
There's soo many ways to compare speeds with cars it's unreal and pointless really. A 300bhp evo would wipe the floor with a 300bhp 200 for example on a full blown launch doing say 0-80. But the same 2 cars doing a rolling start at say 60-100 where 4wd doesn't effect the launch and the 200 will shoot off into the distance. Likewise something as simple as suspension stiffness or tyres could mean the difference between a neck braking launch or one full of wheelspin....
Does it really matter, wasn't the point of this about which car people preferred to drift in?? To be fair any car thats reliable enough to put in regular track time is near the top of the list. Zero point in having some insane spec car if for every 1 hour of track time it needs 10 hours in the garage fixing broken shit.
Good point actually! My ideal car is a hard choice, my s13 that I'm building Is my ideal car in a way. But it's also a bit too much for the road and as with all projects things go a little far and I spent far more on things like the engine than originally planned. An ideal car in a perfect world would be an s13 with a s54 supercharged engine. Simple chassis, awesome looks and handling, yet with a screaming engine/charger under the bonnet. Would never build one though as I don't believe in cross manufacturer engine swaps
out of all the cars iv owned i think my fav car to drive on track was my old 180sx, simple lock mods bb turbo welder s14 rear subframe, had a really grippy set up i loved it, but that said ive recently gone to the dark side an bought an e46 m3 an it is uncompareabe to any s body soarer chaser anything ive owned. i love it i think if i had the money an m3 that had a few drift mods wud b mediocre on track.
Mine would be my old sr powered cef. S13 handling on a long ass bare like that equalled easy as shit lazy skidding that looked awesome.
A black s14a with about 330 bhp decent suspension and arms and diff, that didn't blow up. Same as mine now, but mine seems to blow up.
If i had my sensible head on, it would be a mk4 Supra as it's a well built and capable car, you can kick the fuck out of them and will just go on and on. If i'm allowed to go a bit mad with it, have to say a BMW e24 Six series with a M3 engine would make my life complete. Maybe stretching to an 840 just for the wildcard factor.
200 meters in 12 seconds ??? i'm talking 0-200 kilometers per hour.... in 12 seconds !!! that's 5 seconds faster than the stock M3.... I just did a run with a bad start.... 14second 0-200kmh with first gear and part second gear toasting the tires... I do high 11s in the 1/4 with 118mph... 1.8s 60ft... I'd say it's rather quick for a car that has ~300hp... NA non-turbo !! Nobody was talking about an E30.... E24 with what M3 engine ??? If you're talking S5x engines... then no way.... rather put a S38 in it... or even a M70/73....
I meant to put e36, was actually looking at an e30 for sale at the same times and got my wires crossed. in either case, virtually no BMW has going to have a drag coefficient anywhere near an mx5. No offence whoever you are, but Stav had built, and driven, faaaaaaaar more cars than pretty much anyone else on here. He might talk down to people sometimes, but when there are so shit talkers I can understand why. BTW what weight and gear ratios does your car have then ? I find it incredibly hard to believe a circa 300bhp car doing sub 12 second quarter miles times when westfield sport kits cars, with 250 bhp and 500 kgs are doing high elevens !

Mx5s are terrible aerodynamically speaking. An e36 drag Co efficient is 0.33 Mx5 mk1 is 0.38 S13s for example are 0.30 So mx5s are considerably less aerodynamic,
