Nice repair skills there bud. Surely a skim of filler and that would be as good as new? Least til you replace it properly

Took it to the rolling road last weekend to see what it was doing. This will form a baseline for future mods.

    Current spec:

    -S14a SR20det
-Usual breathing mods (FMIC, 3” , Cone Filter)
    -VVT removed
-Pulsar GTI-R inlet and exhaust cams
-Cosworth 1.5mm Head gasket (8.3:1 Cr)
    -Evo 6 TME Turbo (TD05Hra 16g6 10.5T)
-0.8 Bar / 12 psi (ball and spring MBC)
    -Standard ecu (S14a) map

Considering the fact the tune is way off (Very rich) and the boost pretty low, I wasn’t expecting much.

    I was pleasantly surprised!

    273Bhp at 6576rpm
    235 ft-lb at 5262rpm

It needs a lot of work in the mid range but a lot of that is down to map. The boost is there but there is a bit of bogging before it takes off. Top end is fantastic and it is so much nicer than a std S14 the way it revs. Unlike most T28 SRs it doesn't fall on it's ass at 7000rpm.

You can see from the power curve why it is so fun to drive as it is pretty much all or nothing. The power goes from 60bhp at 3800 rpm to 220 at 4800rpm! You can also see how it can be hard work when you are a chase car. As soon as you lift and end up below 4000rpm, you suddenly only have around 60bhp!

    Here’s a vid….

Next stage is to fill in the midrange and increase the boost. I have a few bits to fit and will cover them in my next update.

Following the rolling road, I have been doing a few little things to improve the midrange power.

One of the first things was to get the VVT back in. I had an old sprocket so stripped it down and rebuilt it. This was fitted back in with the standard S14 cams.

Pulsar cams out…. (I’m going o miss the awesome lopey idle :( )

    VVT sprocket rebuilt…

I managed to get hold of another Evo for turbo for pennies.. This allowed me to build up a cool hybrid that should be perfect for 300-350hp..
I have used the compressor and CHRA from a Evo 6 Tommi Makkinen (16G6HRA) which has the benefit of the Ti turbine wheel. That is now mated to a 9.0 exhaust housing (From an evo 4). This should bring the boost in a little bit earlier than the 10.5 exhaust housing but shouldn’t cause any chocking up top as I will still only be at the lower end of what the turbo is capable of.

    Turbo setup removed..

10.5 housing at back, 9.0 at front

    Turbo back in..

    And mint again….

Next bits to fit are a nice shiny AEM Wideband and then I can get it back on it’s wheel ready for a test.

Plan is to re-map it in it’s new setup to get it safe and responsive. After round 5 is out the way I will look at bigger injectors and start playing with the boost and ALS..

It is all a bit of a rush as RDC round 5 is this weekend!

Nice! Keep the bigger housing and then you can swap em over if needed in the future.

I take it with Pulsar cams you can never run the VVT? Again I guess that's something testing will see what's best. Hard at mo to guess what's best as it's not mapped.

Yeah, that's the plan. Both of the housings are modified to fit so I can now quickly and easily swap between the two to see what is best. Be nice to see the back to back.

Correct. I think I might be able to, but it will require some drilling and mods to the inlet cam for oil feed to the VVT. The Pulsar exhaust cam can be used as it is so I may drop that in again at a later date to get a back to back. I mainly put them in as the internet said they wouldnt fit.. As usual, internet wrong as they fit perfectly and work very well!

I took it for a little drive last night. There are some lean bits so I couldnt really give it full abuse but the boost comes in a chunk earlier now but still holds it to the redline :) Win Win! One other thing worth noting is the sound of the car has now changed quite a bit.. It is now much tamer :(. I would love to put a pair of Poncams in next to get some character back into it.

Next couple of nights will be wiring then an evening or two of mapping up and down the M1

    Awesome work [emoji106]
I assume you rebuilt the cam sprocket because of the dreaded rattle? How did you rebuild it, if you dont mind me asking? I read somewhere that its possibly due to the spring inside going weak or something, but i haven't got a spare one to open up and look at.

Cheers :) Yeah, considering it is just all basically scrap bits bolted to a standard engine it's pretty awesome!

ECU wise, I have bought one of these......

    Digital ECU Tuner 3

I will cover the instalation in a future update but it is now fitted to the car and running.

This will allow me to fit bigger injectors then remove the AFM which saves me a alot of room in the engine bay.

    Cheers:thumbs:

I had one off an old engine that didn't rattle but was caked in crap, so I took it apart, cleaned it all and just put it back together.

I have a noisey one in bits aswell to try and diagnose the cause of the rattle. Ultimatley I would like to create a way of fixing the rattle for good but that job will have to wait until I have more time!

I will update with some pictures of the other little jobs I got done before Pembrey.

    Cheers

    Update…

Prep for RDC round 5 (Pembrey)

With the S14 cams back in and smaller turbine housing on, the engine was ready to run again. Next job was to crack on with the management side of things. I wanted to try a different route to the normal Nistune route so went with something different, which I have yet to see on a UK SR.

First thing to get hold of was a Wideband gauge and controller. I went for the AEM one as compared to the innovate one for the same price, it had better reviews.

The dash wiring and ECU wiring etc was then all pulled out to start chopping and soldering

Quick check with it hard wired to the battery

Next up was something to control the fuelling and ignition… ECU master DET3

This little unit is a very powerful little unit for the money and will give me control over fuel, ignition, boost and auxiliary outputs. It also contains logging software so I should be able to do some pretty neat stuff with it. The wideband is wired into the unit aswel so I can log lambda and plot it against the maps. It also contains an internal map sensor so I will have the ability to remove the AFM and convert the car to MAP (No need for Z32 afm upgrade).

I made a fly lead so the unit can be removed quickly and easily at any time should I need to do any fault finding or run it as std..

Then cut and shut some ecu wires…

Plugged the unit into the laptop and set the configs up and it was running!!

I spent a few hours doing some very rough road mapping, just to make sure it wasn’t too lean. It needs a proper tune big time but I was happy that it would be safe enough to hoon around Pembrey. Straight away compared to the previous setup the following was noticeable:

-Boost comes in waaaaay earlier (+ve from 2000rpm)
-Engine note very different (not as angry)
-Midrange punch very big, top end not as good as it was before

Here is one of the initial logged runs at 1bar of boost (using MBC). (Ignore the actual values as the rolling resistance etc wasn’t set up properly) Check out the boost and torque compared to the previous graph

The torque and boost down low are cool but now it has obviously lost the “screamer” character that it had before. I think over the winter I will go for a set of Poncams then try the 10.5t housing again. Immediate plans following Pembrey are to do a MAF > MAP conversion and fit some bigger injectors. I will then set it up for 1.2 bar boost and see what it is like..

With it driving OK and not blowing up, I tidied the inside back up…

    All done and hidden…

With that all done I loaded it up for Pembrey!

    Cheers mate:thumbs:

I have gone for some 555cc s (believed to be Subaru) They should be good...

A46-00 YELLOW INJECTOR INJECTOR SET JECS 555cc NISMO SUBARU NISSAN SR20DET . | eBay

It is all down to cost tbh.. In the future I would love to go stand alone but at the moment, this was the best value solution. It is working out well so far. Today I did AFM to MAP conversion so I can remove the AFM (and not have to spend £££ upgrading). Next mod is boost control using the piggyback

    Pembrey – Round 5

Last weekend was round 5 of the Retro Drift Championship.

Car was going nicely. I had a bit of an issue in the morning where the standard lambda sensor wires had melted where they were close to the exhaust. This caused some horrible misfires and cutting out which was a bit of a worry. As soon as the wires were found and repaired it was sweet again and it took the abuse all day long.

    The track layout was fantastic.

Instead of the ODC / BDC layout (Judged on corners 1/2/3), the first corner (hairpin) was dropped from the scoring and acted as a kind of drag cone. This allowed the cars to be door on door by clip 1 (on corner 2). The extra, super fast left hander (corner 4 on the above map) was then added on to the end.

This not only raised the speeds dramatically (limiter in 4th) but allowed the twinning to be much closer as the track flowed so well..

We did one lap qualifying, in which I qualified 2nd

I then got through the battles and ended up taking the win 

    Some pics……

Awesome fun driving against Clive in his SR86… This thing is fast!

Looking over my shoulder to see where he is haha..

    Great success!

After returning from Pembrey without breaking anything, I did a few road miles in the car last week. I have now got the AFM > MAP conversion working so am now running without the AFM 

Here is one of the first logged runs with 0.8Bar of boost. This is just on the initial map I created so it obviously needs a lot of work… Boost response on the turbo is fantastic. I can’t wait to wind it up a bit and see how it does!

Next time out is Matsuri, probably just the Saturday then it will be packed away for a few months whilst I build a new project.. (not for me though  )

Great to see it in action at Pembrey after following the build thread - (or at least I was until my workplace started blocking photobucket etc).

And two of my pics up there :D (I'm Nathan)

    Cheers! Great shots!

292 is the torque.. It was 219bhp (at wheels) so around the 260 flywheel mark (still at low, 0.8 bar boost :) )

I have been working on the bottom end and midrange and have found a bit more torque.. Will post some more when the weather is dry enough to drive it without spinning up everywhere!

    Some more shots.....
