Hi, I have been reading other peoples builds etc on here for a few years and thought it was about time I started my own! Up till now I've had 2 Mx5's which you can see below both of which I have spent to much on, made pretty and boosted! I became pretty attached to them and so never properly got to do what I set out to do with my first one, which was to learn to skid. I have played and I keep playing in the boosted mk2.5 but I've spent a lot on it and would rather not smash it up because I haven't learnt enough yet!

    IMG_1392_zpsni4bngvx.
    My much missed mk1!
    IMG_4138_zpslbbbjdyu.
    My Current Mk2.5 Money pit!!

So I eventually got myself together and have bought a proper peach!!! :p

This was after having to excavate it from the driveway from where it was slowly dying, getting it back to mine and removing all of the interior carpets sound deadening everything!!! mainly because the plank I got it from left the windows open for 6 months!

So here it is project Save the Sh*tter!!

    IMG_4206_zpsbp0qi3v5.
    Also came with free mouse!!!
    Thankfully he's moved out now!

So I got it for £200 and as you can see its not pretty!

The aim is to sort it out, weld the diff , fit seats in and paint it all one colour so it doesn't look quite so crap!

Go and get some proper seat time!

First had to do a water pump so I gave it a service and cambelt at the same time!
    IMG_4221_zpszmr8zikb.

    IMG_4211_zpsdc88tbke.

Any advice as to what mods to do to get me in the right direction are welcome!
I have been told some people remove the front ARB, is this a good idea to give better front end grip?
I know the usual, pump the tyres to 50-60psi welded diff and seat time. just interested if there's any small things I can do to help myself while messing around with it! :D

Cheers George, I'm looking forward to getting it done and getting to actually go and practice!

Finally got the diff out last night after one of the PPF bolts had spun the locking tabs off!! So I can get my mate to weld it up for me! :)

Haha cheers mate! hopefully it will turn out ok! got quite abit to do to get it on the road, the previous owner somewhat didn't care at all for the car so many things that need sorting. Lights and brakes being 2 of the most important!

It allows the front wheels to be independent of each other, reducing the understeer and giving more front end grip!

Cheers George I will get that removed before I get it on the road. Trying to find a couple of seats at the moment. Hope the BM is going well. Have you sold the 5??

Cheers bud! This one definitely isn't going to be pretty though! every time I look at it I find more crap but I have to keep telling myself why ive got it!!

I really like yours was reading your thread yesterday, I would really like to rock 13s but the tyres seem to be so much more expensive than 15s :(

Unless you know somewhere cheap for 13s??

Hahaha, it's similar with my car, I look at it sometimes thinking back to the drift days I've done in it and how I've ruined it and think wtf have I done. But I'm all for making it look nice, can be done on the cheap, machine polish every so often, some nice wheels, sorted!

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. In terms of tyres, they are much cheaper than 15's! If you go on eBay and look for something like "VW Lupo 13 inch steelies and tyres" then you'll get a set of steelies with tyres come up for usually between the £20 - £60 mark, so you get 4 tyres, skid on them, weigh the steelies in and get a chunk of your money back. Wheels are cheap too, I think the Minilites I have are like £90 per wheel at the moment, can find them on www.johnbrownwheels.com

These are such fun little cars, main thing with these is how reliable and cheap they are. A full tank for me is the journey to drift day, whole day of bashing the car off the limiter in 2nd gear, and journey back and I still have fuel left over. The fact that during the day I only have to open the bonnet once and that's just to check if everythings okay. Incredible little cars to learn in man.

So I haven't had that much time to work on it recently to only a small update. I decided to get the diff out and get it welded up ........ well that was the plan anyway!!

So I set to and undid all the usual parts, prop shafts as they are bolt in ones being a 1.6 ( I know not the strongest but trying to work with what ive got for now)

Everything was going fine until one of the PPF bolts that holds the diff to the long brace that runs from the gearbox to the diff decided to spin!!

I tried allsorts to get it off knowing I have a spare bolt however when you haven't got your angle grinder and your determined to get it off. Its time to crack out the trusty junior hacksaw!!

    And bosh its out!!
    IMG_4260_zpsoh99vmhv.

I was not going to be beaten!
So at this point I was pretty happy ...... well that was short lived!!

I took the diff to my mates to get it welded up and took it apart to find ......
    9C49E4B1-498F-4262-B407-B41BC6D29755_zpslmz4qlcr.

the worlds worst LSD!! At this point I feel I'm the only person to ever get annoyed that I have an LSD rather than an open diff!

Thankfully we have an MX5 breakers nearby so I shot over to them and they have ended doing me a good deal. Just got to wait to pick it all up now but I have swapped it for a few odds and sods needed for the car and a welded 1.8 diff, casing shafts and prop. All in all when its done it will be stronger and wont sh*t itself quite so easily!

Unfortunately now that means removing my driveshafts. 1 has come out nicely the other one I can't even remove the nut on the end of the shaft let alone get it out of the hub! I have heated it up and used my dugga dugga gun on it and still no movement! I have one more idea to try if not it will mean replacing the hub aswell!

In the mean time I've been abit bored so I have managed to paint the drivers side of the interior
    IMG_4278_zpsuqmhqsyq.

    IMG_4281_zpsuwzmaohz.

looks abit tidier and as I wont be running carpets Id rather it was all one colour!

I also got bored and wanted to see if I could make the Gash orange wheels look any better ....

    IMG_4269_zpszvgc41ny.
Personally think it looks far better!! So just the other 3 to do now!!

although I did make one boo boo

    IMG_4270_zpsx8wrkwab.

If I still lived at home this would have been a big issue!!!! hahaahahaahaa :p..... Good job its my own grass then! maybe for the next 3 ill remember to put some cardboard down first!

Well that's it for now. Hopefully get to spend some time on it this weekend and start making more progress!

Clive, i had to cut the castle nut of the end of the shaft and get a fuck off hammer to smack the shaft out. i ended up buying a new rear hub and shaft for about £40, saves a lot of time and hassle!

Ye I've managed to get shafts and hubs aswell as the welded diff and prop all in 1.8 so all I've got to do is try one last method to remove the shaft but if not ill change the hub and shaft together. That's on the todo list for this weekend at some point.

So this weekend was busier than I anticipated but I did unfortunately have time to poke at the sills! I wished I hadn't when I started to swiss cheese the outer sill on both sides!!
    IMG_4335_zps8zcgpula.
    IMG_4334_zpsfpadzqro.
    IMG_4332_zpssrwippq8.

So at this point I was thinking this isn't going to be a quick easy build its time to cut it out and replace to at least make it somewhat solid!!

So out came the grinder, rust eater and welder! Only ever done little bits of welding before so its not gonna be pretty!

    No Weld Porn here!! :wack:

    IMG_4336_zps608jzgrc.
after grinding back and cutting what I could out I rust treated the rest and made up a repair patch.

    Seems legit right ??? :rolleyes::rolleyes:

    IMG_4350_zpslg5t8xdd.
    IMG_0960_zps2p8ygdyh.
    One side complete!!
for barely having done this kind of thing I'm fairly proud of how it came out to be honest. Main thing is its now solid again and hopefully wont cause me any more issues!

Onto the next side where I found it was somewhat worse!!
    IMG_4351_zpszjupcwrm.

This is going to take some serious work!!

    IMG_0961_zpsanifkeg2.

And that's as far as I got! lots left to do to get the passenger sill sorted but at least I've made a start!

You never know one day I might actually get to skid this thing!!! But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised when I only gave £200 for the car!!
