    Hello everyone,

Welcome to the build thread of my Eunos Roadster

My name is Miko and I own a very early MX5 which I bought in February last year. After driving my first car for 2 years I thought it was a great car to move onto next. I debated many cars but insurance wouldn't allow many with me being 19 at the time, apart from the little Roadster, which I always wanted to own one day.

I have been on Driftworks for a while, looking at peoples builds and the cars that are for sale. I've always thought it's a brilliant idea sharing a journey of building a car with people who share the same passion, and I thought that maybe now that I've started drifting the Mazda it would be a good idea to share with people what I've done to the car so far and mention some future plans for it. I have actually purchased the car off an advert placed here in the Driftworks forum!

It's a Japanese imported Roadster which was originally British Racing Green, however the previous owner had it blown over in Audi Merlin Purple which really caught my eye. It's a gorgeous colour, it looks really nice at night in particular. The car was in a very good condition for its age, despite having 212,000 KM on the clocks.

Here are a few pictures of the car took the week that I bought it.

    20160222_112610_zpsfpvoxo9t.

Excuse the filth. As this is the only car I own, I use it to commute everywhere including University. Every weekend this car does 100 miles to take me from Uni back home so I can go to work, not the best car for such journey but I still love it!

    image_zpsz74sozu1.

The interior was pretty standard. The only additional thing that was installed in the car was the TR Lane roll bar which set the car off really nicely, and added just a tiny sense of security. I really like the early Roadsters, I prefer not having the chrome speaker surrounds, just makes it look more cool! The only thing that always hurts is the fact I don't have a boot pull so every time I want to get in the boot I have to use the key.

I'm 6ft so the 360mm steering wheel wasn't helping much however that changed within a couple months.

    image_zpskkxbj2ef.

Above, the most important part. The engine is a 1.6 B6ZE. The previous owner had it fully rebuilt and skimmed at Blink Motorsport. The new compression ratio of the engine was 11:1 which obviously is quite high. This meant from day one that I couldn't really turbocharge the car without swapping major parts first. However, this didn't deter me as I'm really into my NA powered cars, as I spent a lot of my time looking at NA builds of these engines, as well as other 4 pots. I particularly like the thought of having throttle bodies on this car however it is quite expensive, bearing in mind I'm a student and can't afford a lot! The car dyno'd at 125bhp which was a very good figure for a basically standard 1600.

When I bought it the car already had Gaz Gold Pro coilovers installed, and some refreshed wishbones and bushes which together made the car handle really well. The car featured a VLSD which did seem to work properly still somehow. It had really sticky Federal 595 RSR tyres on it which were amazing. The term "Handles like a go-kart" gets thrown around too much these days, but a combination of a rebuilt engine, freshly serviced GAZ suspension and track tyres this car literally did, in fact, handle like a go-kart. I'm not going to lie, I miss the way this car was when I bought it.

Below is a picture of it all nice after a wash!

    Screen%20Shot%202017-04-09%20at%2023.26.51_zpsvfirsqkw.

And another one when I decided to grab my DSLR and take a few shots!

    DSC_0614_zpsc8ijkzs4.

I also went to see my friend who has a Defender. Parked the car in front of his and couldn't believe the size difference between the two motors.

    Screen%20Shot%202017-04-09%20at%2023.36.46_zpstinevrra.

Despite my car being pretty much track attack ready, drifting was something I've always wanted to try and having a decent base to start off to do just that, I decided to start making the car my own.

The first "mod" were the wheels. I really disliked the car on the Team Dynamics (sorry to anyone who thinks it looked nice). I swapped them for a set of Rota RB's which sort of were the look I was going for.

    DSC_0189_zpssvqlzrnf.

Above is a picture of the car on said Rotas. It was also after I lowered it a little to give it a better look.

The next thing that appeared on the car was a Garage Vary replica lip. I managed to get hold of a polyurethane which is obviously a tad stronger than the fiber glass ones. Below are some pictures of the car with the GV lip.

    Screen%20Shot%202017-04-09%20at%2023.36.22_zpsiphpilxk.

    Screen%20Shot%202017-04-09%20at%2023.36.34_zpsho8zwwos.

As mentioned earlier the car had a HUGE steering wheel, and the fact I'm tall didn't help. I wanted a nice small steering wheel so I went for a suede 330mm Personal Grinta. I really loved that steering wheel, it made the car feel a lot better.

    20160412_092733_zpsicphhpej.

Couldn't say no to a cheeky quick release either!

After all that I have decided I want to liven up the engine bay a little bit. I got hold of some paint and sprayed my cam cover red. I have also bought a K&N induction kit to get a nice noise out of the car and a little more response. The kit didn't really make sense to me. The position of the MAF meant that the filter had to sit pretty much on the manifold, which then obviously it would take in a lot of hot air. The kit came with a flexi pipe that was meant to be fed from underneath the car to face the filter so that cold air is directly fed to the filter as I drive a long. Sick idea, however the filter is still next to the red hot manifold.

I have decided to use the pipe to re-route the filter to behind the pop up headlight. It's quite handy as the car came with angled light covers which meant the air was being fed through the opening under the bonnet, if you look to the bottom right of the picture below, you can see a slant in the headlight cover, through that slant cold air was fed, whilst the filter sat right behind it. I have wrapped the plastic pipe with some gold insulation foil to stop it being affected too much by the heat. As you can see, below is the outcome.

    16196344_1454112907962043_1322673360_o_zpsw0n4jx2x.

Soon after I got a decat pipe and fitted that, the car instantly started sounding a lot nicer.

Sometime in June (I think) I wanted to change wheels again. I've always adored MX5's on 13" wheels and I thought it would be a good idea to get hold of some. I ordered a set of 13" Superlites and some Nankangs . As soon as they arrived I got them fitted onto the car and I was in love. At first I wasn't sure about the gold colour however once on the car the purple + light gold combo looked real nice!

    Wheel and Tyre specs:
    13 x 7 JBW Superlite ET -7
    Nankang NS-II 175/60/13

Here they are, above, still in their little blankets after arrival!

Then on the car! Obviously as you can see ARCHGAP!!!

    That soon got fixed ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

If you're still reading this then you are probably wondering when is the actual drifting going to start since we're on a drifting forum? Soon!

It's difficult with time as I am at Uni 5 days a week and work weekends, so the progress on the car isn't the quickest in the world and since most drift days are on weekends that's also difficult!

September sucked as I was back at Uni, nice to see the guys again and everything but it meant time with my MX5 was limited! One of my mates who I live with at Uni has an S14 and also wanted to get into drifting. Around October time we both decided to bite the bullet and just go for it and book a drift day. At that point I was really itching to just get out, I watched too much drifting at the time and just wanted to get out myself, I decided not to spend more money on the car and just decided to book drift days and buy tyres and I really wanted a bucket seat...

BANG! Picked up a genuine Bride Zeta 1 from Japwestmods. Got some side mounts too from JBFabrication!

The quilted doorcards were DIY. A large piece of faux quilted leather from ebay for £9.99 and a stanley knife and some glue!

I managed to find a pair of Superlights on ebay with perfectly good tyres for £60, bargain or what? Problem: they were orange. However I painted them black and they looked much better!

The drift day I booked was at Three Sisters. It was on Sunday the 6th November! That was my first drift day!

Was such a stupidly cold morning, got there, chucked the drift wheels on, 60psi'd the tyres and went to the briefing. The day was a "Novice Day" therefore not the whole track was open to drift, only certain corners. This made me feel better as I felt like I wasn't under any pressure and the gaps between cars were large enough to accomodate any mistakes.

One thing I probably haven't mentioned, my car at this point still had a viscous diff.

I can remember the first session out, I basically just drove around the track quite quickly for the first lap just to get used to it.

As the day went along I felt myself getting a lot more confident. One thing that I was told, that I found out myself as well was that these cars need to be pushed to drift, and I'm sure the VLSD wasn't helping either. I made a huge mistake, for about half of the day I was trying to do most corners in 3RD gear which was a no-go as it just didn't do anything. One of the guys there told me to just drop it into second and do the whole track in that gear, I listened to his advice and boom! What a completely different world. It was obviously a lot quicker, but it felt somewhat easier? Felt much better anyway.

    ^Lol trackday.

Thanks to Lewis @ Kingu Media and Stuart Sheil Photography for the images above.

The day featured plenty of spins, mistakes, panic hands but most importantly seat time and practise! That is the ultimate goal for me and the car, I've started setting myself mini goals and objectives for the next drift day, which was pretty soon!

3rd December 2016 was my second drift day, also at Three Sisters. This was another Novice day. Car still had VLSD as the previous drift day seemed pretty okay to be honest so I thought I'd wait, now I realise it was a mistake. It was a good day, the car performed well and I felt myself getting a little more used to drifting and a lot more confident. I noticed that on my second drift day I started linking corners, and doing some small manji in between.

The day went well. I learnt a lot of new things, techniques and learnt the car a lot more.

One very important thing I haven't yet touched on is the drifting community itself. It's a fantastic thing to be fair. At the drift day, everyone is so helpful and willing, it's a very homely atmosphere, you know these people are in the same boat, well, majority of them, hence the "novice day" part! I always used to be terrified of spinning out, I always thought people would laugh at me or judge me for it however I at that point I learnt that all it is, is just a massive laugh.

I wasn't really into the drift community then, didn't know much people but at that point I felt very comfortable and I knew that people are there to help, and that's what made me more into it.

My third and last drift day up to this date was the 22nd of January, also at Three Sisters. This time it was a normal drift day where everyone was allowed to attend.

This drift day, the little Mazda now had a welded diff. I've also got hold of some 6mm rack spacers thanks to Dan from Destroy or Die! The first two drift days were done with pretty poor alignment, however this one I had the car fully aligned. In the front I went 2.5 degrees negative camber with zero toe. With the car being low, the rear had natural camber gain however I stuck as little camber as possible on the back and zero toe again.

First of all the drift day was a lot busier, there were a lot more cars and people present. A lot of there cars were BDC spec machines which were quite intimidating!

First lap, first session I span out on the first corner, then the second corner too!... then it was fine. I'm guessing this was due to not being used to the welded diff. I did go to Mexico briefly and try it on a few private roads there before the drift day and it felt fine however it just felt a lot different on the track.

However as the day went along it was all good, obviously, standard progress. I felt a lot better behind the wheel, much more confidence with the welded diff and felt miles better with the rack spacers with that bit of more travel and lock in the rack. Worked a treat! On that day, despite messing up a bit still I felt as if I progressed quite a lot, I managed to link my corners a lot better, the welded diff felt more snappier therefore that helped with linking for me!

Thanks to Kingu Media, J444 AKK Motorsport Photography, P.R Photography and Colly Photography!

Was an awesome day :D The welded diff definitely make a huge difference, for the better of course! The alignment also worked wonders, it was like a different car.

After that drift day it slowed down for me. I was back at University with assignments coming at me left, right and center and it was very difficult to find time to even book drift days or buy tyres. Still stuck with the 5 days a week at Uni and weekend at work thing.

    17888073_1552285258144807_1685025531_n_zpsj1cawgce.

With the car being quite low, as you may have noticed the GV Lip has dissapeared, it's somewhere in Shirebrook, Derbyshire as it decided to fly off on my way to the MOT. I have got a new one at the moment however this one is fiber glass!

One day on the way to the shop I ripped my exhaust off on a really dodgy speed bump. It's really tired anyway, has a massive blow in the downpipe and the decat broke completely. I had to get hold of another decat whilst I gather money together for a full system. I found one however it wasn't like my old straight pipe one but it was a "silenced" decat with a much bigger section to accomodate the baffle inside. This meant I had to raise the car (eeeek) whilst I look for the new exhaust!

I managed to find one, a 4-1 Fujitsubo manifold for them high end gains, and the rest powerflow with a Scorpion backbox. Not bad for £250! Fitting this on tuesday.

I've also just bought myself a new steering wheel! I got rid of the Personal after my first drift day as it wasn't very comfortable for me when drifting! The new one I have is a 330mm Nardi Classic with black spokes, I love it!

    17837476_1551835504856449_94529685_o_zpshm9bizfn.

    So what's next?

I have a drift day this Friday, 14th of April and 5th May. It is again at 3 sisters as it is the local circuit however I am going to try my best and make Teesside and Rockingham in the upcoming months as it's somewhere I really want to go. My aim for this year is to get as much seat time as I can possibly get.

So far through this journey I have met loads of amazing people, people that have helped me with issues, people that have provided me with help and tips, assistance at drift days, helping me with the car. You know who you are and I'd just like to thank you for everything so far. As I said, the community is amazing and I've met so many new friends through drifting, let the good times roll!

Hope you enjoyed this so far. Obviously I will update as I go along, towards the end of this month I'm sorting out a pair of Bomex skirts to go on. Adam from Retroshine is spraying up a fancy cam cover for me too so that should be on fairly soon. The plan is to advance the timing by 12 degrees this month too.

Today I got the Bride seat out of the car and chucked the old standard tombstone drivers seat in. Bit of a risky move as I have the drift day on Friday and it will probably be horrible without a bucket seat however the padding has been removed from the standard seat so it holds me in pretty tight too.

The plan is to fix the seat up a bit, has some rips on the bolster and needs stitching up in some places too. I also wish to spray the back of it some fancy colour, not sure yet though, any ideas? I want to get hold of some dye that AutoBrite do to freshen the seat up and spray it black to its original colour back when it was new in the 90's.

    8bb25c39-2aa5-4789-971e-ddbf404f3d27_zpsftqnuksg.

Gave the interior a nice clean whilst the seat was out and I had access to the floor which was impossible to get to whilst the Bride was in, I found a dry strip of bacon from a Tesco meal deal sandwich, a Hershey's wrapper and a £2 coin! Not bad.

I then chucked the old seat back in.

    edb1f940-b2e6-4520-ba47-dd972df3ba88_zpsn6rqdjbr.

It's not in the best condition but it will do for now.

It's obviously a lot more comfortable than the Bride which has next to zero padding and the fiber glass bolster wedges in your hips. The side mount also sits quite far forward as mentioned before, so having the adjustability of the standard seat is really nice again!

The exhaust is getting put on tomorrow so will update when that's done!

    Cool thread!

Certainly a smart looking lil mx for your starter drift days, the 13"s certainly give a special kind of look. The Nardi and gear knob are tidy, always nice to have a pleasant interior, happy to see you haven't stripped it like most newcomers get the urge to! I was tempted to spray the back of my seat something fancy, then decided that It's so hard to see unless you have the roof down, a fun mod idea for a quiet sunny weekend mind, would be rude for you not to go purple :)

    See you around, happy drifting!

Thank you very much for the kind words! Really apprecieate it :D Yeah I'm not really into stripped interiors etc. and also like mentioned it is a daily and it's meant to be comfortable, well, it's not really but you know what I mean haha. Purple is a very good shout for the seat! I'll have a look into it cheers :)

The new exhaust went on today, thanks to Sean at The Garage down the road from me. Got there bright and early and cracked on. Surprisingly none of the bolts were seized up and everything went according to plan. The old downpipe had a huge split in it which was causing a massive blow, and the exhaust had small cracks and holes all down it from the abuse. The back box was held together by good ole' Gun-Gum which was still pretty well set in there when we took it off the car, and the baffle inside it was also in bits so it was about time I actually changed it!

The new set up features a 4-to-1 Fujitsubo manifold, the ports on this new manifold are about 4-5mm bigger than the standard one. I've heat wrapped it a few evenings before, which obviously made my whole body itchy for the next century or so. It has a silencer, right after the manifold, then just a straight bit up until a Scorpion back box, right after it is a tiny silencer just before the exit. Much back pressure.

    17916561_1554865687886764_1103851628_o_zpslbpkhupm.

Above you can see the size difference between the two manifolds.

    a76e1c68-379b-4e14-a0b3-6eff3a966325_zpscrf14i65.

Above is a rubbish picture what the new set up consists of.

The oxygen sensor hole on the new manifold was considerably further back than the original one, this meant that the o2 sensor couldn't be used with the new set up, an attempt was made to connect it however it didn't reach the plug up near the coil pack so we used the o2 sensor that came on the new manifold as it had the wire cut as if the previous owner ran it like that anyway. Decided to test start the car to see if the engine warning light comes on however it didn't so it was all gravy!

    17887478_1554865664553433_97306337_o_zpsy06leoyu.

Here she is all chucked on!

The car is sooo much quieter now and doesn't sound broken anymore. All the noise is in the top end, but it's nice to have a quieter car to be fair, again it helps on those long drives between home and uni and commuting around. Still has a nice purr to it though. Also had a chance to go on a couple of A roads and B roads today and felt a lot better response which should naturally happen with a set up like this anyway, it works well!

Now to see how it performs on Friday at Three Sisters! Which, in fact, is what the next update will be about.

So the drift day on Friday 14th at Three Sisters went extremely well. The car didn't play up at all and there was a huge difference in response with the new exhaust. It was a ridiculously rainy day, in fact, on the way back there were a few moments where I was genuinely terrified of driving down the M6, as the wipers wouldn't keep up with how severe the rainfall was. During the day it was basically on and off, the rain kept coming and going although the track was kept wet all day by a spray lorry.

First of all, I'd like to thank Duncan Allison who helped me a lot during the day, he sat in with me and talked me through a few techniques and how to use them whilst on track. It really helped and boosted my confidence with the car pretty much straight away which made for some interesting spins as the day went along.

I set an objective before the drift day, to try and work on transitions a bit more, especially manjis. This is something Duncan had talked me through in the car, and how to aim to get a well timed manji on a straight between two corners. I understood what he said, and I tried to apply it, and almost got it! However... the rather high curb got the best of me, in particularly my NEW Garage Vary lip (replica, for all the purists) which unfortunately snapped in half BUT I do have the other half so that will just get stitched together.

I was almost there, to get it right I just needed to get the timing right on the foot brake, which is the objective for the next day!

This drift day felt as if I had progressed quite a bit. Despite it being greasy on track I threw the car in vigorously as much as I could, which is what I've always wanted to start, as I'm quite into the late 90's NA style violent drifting. Around midday I switched tyres and the new ones were very grippy, which sort of really made me throw the car into the corners anyway in order to drift, and that was a huge stepping stone for me, it sort of broke the barrier.

I think towards mid-day I started feeling fairly comfortable. Another thing that I learnt is to follow a line. So far I have been trying to just get around the track without spinning out, and now that I have the car control, it was worth trying to follow a racing line around the circuit to get a better flow. Again, thanks to Duncan for pointing out how to go about it and the best way to learn.

Anyway, enough of the talking, here's some pictures from the day.

...and above, looking sorry for itself after driving back to Uni in the pissing rain!

Thanks to all the photographers for the pictures, they did a great job and huge props to them for standing in the rain all day taking pictures, something I probably wouldn't do haha

Not sure about the next drift day, probably 5th of May however I'll have to confirm. Meanwhile the car is on the TeamPH stand at Japfest so come say hello. There are a few nice bits to go on the car before though, so in the next post it should look a lot nicer :)

Not much has changed since the last update, I managed to fix the splitter and got hold of some Bomex skirts. Here's the freshest picture of the car that I have.

    Screen%20Shot%202017-06-03%20at%2023.01.24_zps5fjwsol7.

On the 29th of May I attended a drift day at Rockingham. It was quite a nice day however the car played up and I ended up getting very little seat time, despite that I still had fun watching everyone enjoying the track and the awesome layout provided by Rockingham Drift days.

I met with a few guys at a service station on the M6 and then cruised down to the venue. When we got there the weather was clear, however, it was obvious it was going to rain at some point; I appreciate it sometimes as it gives the little Mazda about 300 more horsepower. I was getting worried about it being too dry to be fair, as I only had two pairs of tyres, of which 1 pair was a decent set of Nankang NS2's which would probably have ended up being too grippy and hard to drift on in my low powered car.

This was my first time attending any drift day that wasn't Three Sisters. Everything was slightly different at, I was looking forward to it because with it being a paddock day, there was technically nothing to crash into which meant I could push myself a little bit more. As soon as I got into the briefing I instantly saw some familiar faces and felt settled in and that feeling of things being "different" vanished. At the end of the day, like mentioned before in this thread, I appreciate the drifting community because no matter where you go you always find yourself amongst people just like yourself and you instantly feel a lot better even if it's your first time somewhere.

After finishing my second lap I went to line up for my next, however I noticed that there was steam coming out from under my bonnet where the expansion tank is. I immediately turned back into the pits and opened my bonnet to find coolant had pissed out everywhere and the car was overheating. Obviously at this point a lot of things go through ones head, as this hasn't ever happened to me during a drift day.

With the help of friends we managed to diagnose one of the many issues which was a blocked thermostat. It was getting jammed and wasn't letting any coolant through which obviously made the car overheat. Took the thermostat out and went to start my car, put my key in, however I immediately noticed that there was no electricity whatsoever UNLESS the key was out of the ignition barrel, hmmmm. After a lot of head scratching and asking around I managed to boil it down to this...

    18926441_1630910403615625_1970337114_o_zpsgychvqp2.

The earth on the power plant frame was literally snapped in half. I've found out that apparently it's quite a common thing with these cars, and considering that it is nearly 30 years old I'm not too surprised, same with the thermostat to be honest. Huge props to Adam Maciejewski of Retroshine for sorting me out with a new terminal and getting me back onto the track.

    18768382_1151267555018997_4321029186480077791_o_zpslyeuqnsx.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts, the car overheated again after another 2 laps. There was torrential rain and I was pretty tired and sick of the day so I decided to let the car cool down and set off on my way home.

After I got back and got some sleep, I spent some time looking at all the things that could've caused this. HG was fine, the radiator itself seemed fine, all the coolant pipes had pressure after removing the thermostat. I threw in a new thermostat and went my local mechanic Sean at The Garage in Mansfield Woodhouse to get some things tested. It turned out that the fan switch/temperature sensor on top of the thermostat housing was dead, so the fan wasn't switching on when the temperature was getting a bit high.

Next trip was to MiataWarehouse in Chesterfield to pick up a fan switch. Now the car is working fine.

    18768165_1625618167478182_6676424454028115007_o_zpskd3ypfnm.

Next plans? Probably wire up a manual switch for the rad fan, the days are getting hotter and aren't very forgiving so it's a decent idea to have a fan on majority of the time to keep the temps down.

Next drift day looks like the 9th of July at Rockingham again.

Thank you heaps to the photographers at Rockingham, providing the amazing shots.

I can't actually see through your pics but is/was yours an A/C model?

If so, they should have come with twin fans and (even if you've removed the 2nd rad and pump and all the piping etc) the 2nd fan will work on the AC switch with your heater controls :D

Do the 9th July one man! :D It's both Meihan and paddock day so should be pretty good. I have to agree with you on that combo haha ;)

It is the A/C model man :) Unfortunately the previous owner removed the A/C including the fan! :/ It might be an idea to get hold of an A/C fan and see if I can wire that up to the button again and use it as an extra bit of cooling :)

Before the Rockingham Drift Day I managed to pick up a fancy rocker cover from Adam of @retroshine. It's a pretty awesome grinding effect with flake over it, fades from dark red into fuchsia, looks awesome, especially when the light hits it and you can see the grinding effect! Pictures don't do its justice. Check out my instagram for a close-up video of it: @mikomagician

Here's a picture of my car parked up at Japfest, thanks to Will Ashcroft for the photo!

Current plans are to replace pod filter with the standard air box and get hold of a nice OEM fit filter for it. Car's stance is pretty wide however I think I could do with about 10mm wider front, so spacers will make an appearance soon.

Depending on pea's, I might look into getting 4x114.3 hubs for the car as I'd like to (hopefully) look into importing some nice wheels from Japan.
