I’ve recently finished building a mk2 escort with my dad, the time has come and the sad 1.3 just isn’t doing the trick anymore. I’ve done some research and I think the best bet is a SR20DET but want to know if anyone has any other good ideas? Ideally looking for a reliable Japanese 4 cylinder with some decent hp! Open to anything better then the original motor

Forget about SR20 or 4AGE, go for a Honda engine, K24 from an Accord.

If I could start my whole project again it would be the way I go.

Is this a very costly swap?

Big aftermarket support coming on for the rwd k2x swaps now. I bet Honda engines and bmw transmissions are fairly easy to come by for you over there?
My other suggestion is a Mitsubishi 4g63t. Loads of easy cheap power to be had, many trans options for different power levels, super under rated imo. It's the lump sitting in the bay of my swap right now. I can say tho, the Honda and Mitsu swaps will be a bit more in depth considering they're both using a motor that started life in a fwd platform. You might just be able to scoop up an entire sr20 dropout, get a prop shaft made and be done with it
