Could it be as simple as welding in mounts from another car which has coilovers available for it, since the mk2 hilux 2wd i've got already has shocks and leaf springs, could I just remove the leaf springs and replace the OE shocks with coilovers from say an S13?

Or would there be problems with structural integrity at the shock mounting points, since the weight of the truck is supported by the leaf springs?

im not 100% but someone else will know but i think you have to get a link kit. as the axle will be clamped to the leaf and stop it from moving in a forward backward direction. you may also have to turret it to support the extra weight.

Will need links and mounts fabbing in. And possible strengthening of the mounts on the axle. Its a fair bit of work!

I've thought about that, since i'll be buying a complete donor (probably an S14), I was thinking that I could mount the S14 axle directly to the hilux chassis?

Or is that a bad idea?

Its something that used to happen a lot on the Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts when they went for a "turreted back end" for competition. There were a lot of kits available, probably still are, do some searches on Escort 4 or 5 link suspension and you should get some ideas on how to fabricate the sort of mounts you need.

Axle articulation can be limited by shock travel. Although it doesn't provide you the rear turrets and strengthening points. Also you need to consider the squat/dive geometry provided by the rods.

Personally I'd want a 5th Panhard or Watts linkage to eliminate latteral movement.

It wouldn't be expensive so I can't see any reason why not

In regard to rear turrets and strengthening points, this is what I was thinking about doing: P1010065-1.

Will that sort of design work well with an S14 axle and coilovers do you think?

    S14 axle?

Toyota HiLux is the one - some have limited slip diffs in as standard.

I've been told they crap themselves at about 250+ bhp by people who run rover V8s, which is why I was set on using a S14 axle (since I want to buy a complete donor to avoid head aches) plus I don't need to fab mounts on the axle to mount tarmac spec coilovers. Do you think it's up to the abuse, any thoughts on the suspension mounting design I posted above for drifto?
