    Hi All
If i take a car in for an MOT with some time still left on the existing MOT and the car fails does the existing MOT become null and void?

    Thanks

not unless the garage says the failure is dangerous

If it fails the previous mot is still inforce until it ends.
However it is an offence to drive a defective vehicle, a failed mot means vehicle is defective.

my dad has done this and the car has failed the test and a failure certificate was issued meaning the car then had no mot however if it still has test on it ask for a failure certificate not to be issued but just pay for the test that was carried out as if a failure certificate is issued it will make the current mot void

or at least thats what happened to my dad may be different

If you got a month left, and it passes, you will get unto a 13 mth mot.

NO ! Any failure is dangerous, that is the point of the MOT.

If you fail an MOT it proves your car is not road worthy and invalidates any remaining MOT.

The only way around this is to book a pre-mot test with your freindly mot centre, they will then effectively test your car to the mot criteria without entering it on the system, the advantage being when it fails you can still use it (assuming you still have mot, as it was not an official mot). The disadvantage is if it passes you then need to still put it through a proper test.

This is what I do to ensure I remain 100% within the law

As said it's been proven to no longer be road legal, but still using it is a grey area it was wrote that you could as long as it was booked in at the soonest available time.

It is not a grey area, since the digitalisation of the mot system it is very clear. You fail the mot and it cancels any current mot, it is all recorded and available to the old bill should you drive past them.

I specifically asked if the database is updated with the failure and was told yes. If it wasn't there would be no point this new system as you could just modify the paper mot certificate. What is registered on the database is all the police care about and prosecute with.

Go to garage , ask for pre mot test.

then if its good , ask for an mot , if its got faults highlighted , fix and book mot
