Hey Guys, thought i'd start a little project thread to show how my MX5 has came along.. Im not taking the MX5 too far as i have had many projects before that have gotten out of control and taken too much time and too much monies!! Anyway i bought this Mx5 its a '95 1.8 and is pretty tidy 70k miles on the clock, sadly i dont have a pic of how it was when i first bought it... It came with these horrid lights, which i removed: These 17"s which are way too big for a 5, which i removed: I removed the front number plate and backing as i think it gives a smoother front end: And i removed the drivers side front wing as it was too dented to repair: I the gave it a complete G3 cutting with the mop to bring the paint back to life, hence why the pics have white splattered everywhere as i am get to polish the G3 off completely.... I got me a new front plate.. say oooooo: New wings, which i am yet to unwrap: It stands looking fairly sad for itself: Pics are crud, will get some new ones when its back on it shoes...
Toyo's turned up so fitted those and balanced wheels all ready to fit: Heres a pic before me and Tom detailed it today, having unknown coilover issues.. meant to be 100mm lowered but somethings up: We wet G3 Mopped the entire car as i dont think it had been cleaned in 15 year lol, the paint was grey and pitted all over: Then we hit it with Auto Glym paint renovator by hand all over, mer polish, and then Megs wax and brought the paint up almost like new.. pic is bad as was dark when i finished:
And i fitted my number plate. Ride height is gash here, Next plans are: Fit my 5zigen exhaust system De-Cat it Spray and fit wide arches when they turn up Spray and fit square number plate rear panel Spray the 4 spokes on the wheels black Sort the ride height out properly
Front 2 wheels masked up, flatted, primed and sprayed: Only done the front two currently, as i takes AGES to mask them up lol.. Fitted the new coilovers, its VERY low.. too low infact. I had to roll the arches using tin snips, a hammer and block of wood.. doesnt matter as im fitting my wide arches soon! Also fitted my 5Zigen exhaust system and de-catted it.. It has so much camber.. Next up is: - Spray other 2 wheel centres black - Test fit arches, spray and final fit them - Spray & Fit square plate rear panel - Remove the diff, weld it locked, and re-fit it
Arches needed a sorting for future plans 40mm spacers fitted, et10 rotas = et-30... (BUUUT new wheels coming soon).. Got rid of carpet, sound deadening, and various other useless material:
Now, the car has came A LONG way since the above, as its been about 2 months since the above took place... Latest pics and progress will come very soon, ! (And future plans).
Great thread. I will be keepin an eye on this. I just bought an mx-5 last week and have very similar plans. I def wont be goin for the over arches I hate them. What new wheels you got for it? I am mad lookin for a good set at the moment...
Thanks matey ! Them rotas above are for sale, as they are in the last pic above! I got some et0 XXR's going on, just becuase the offset is better and they look the dogs bollox on !
Shush James, this car totally rocks! Good work there mate, really loving the look! Using 40mm spacers is gay, but certainly looks good! I might have to 'pop' over to Norwich later this year to see a friend - want to do my paint while I'm there? It's a black, slightly scabby FC rex. But I'm sure it'd come up beautifully with some effort!
yeah i agree it looks really nice i was just pointing out that the back wheel looks pushed farward in the arch
Thanks for the comments guys! James, i agree but i have raised it slightly now so looks better, as it was near on un-driveable set at this height! Papercutout, if your ever about in Norwich or around the area you'l have to let me know! Nothing beats a good old wet mopping with G3 compound! Now about to upload some more recent photos!
Yes, it is the same car! Ok so i have been up to the past few weeks: - Flourescent green paint (Although photos don't show too well it is actually BRIGHT and NEON/FLOURESCENT in real life) - Eunos rear panel and import plate - TORSEN L.S DIFF (w000hooo, skids like a bitch now) - De-cat - Nardi 330mm dished steering wheel - LUKE 3point harnesses - Lazy eye kit and yellow headlight bulbs - T.R Lane roll bar / rear cage - Decals (More to add when my driftworks ones arrive) - Cusco Towe Hooks
Just placed my bid on a couple of Mini DV Track Cams ;P! Could be fun! Oh and tomorrow, im going to weld my old standard diff! Does anyone run a welder on an MX5 on here?
Looking at the job you did I definitely will do! Good work there, looks like you've been spending/having fun! I bet that is uber bright in real life! Flourescent always looks dulled down in pics, just the way it reflects I think. Just for the sake of looks, how about a front lip? I think captain muppet has a welder, but most people seem to find the torsen is actually pretty good in these!
I wanted the Garage Vary front lip but the bumper as it is now scrapes going in and out of my drive so i can't have one ! And that sucks! Yeah i heard the Torsen diffs out-live the cars they are in 2 and 3 times over! Im gonna weld my standard diff up tomorrow, as doing my mates volvo 340 diff too!
Yep, mine has a welder on it. It was on the car when I got it, so I've no idea how it compares to a Torsen. Same issues as welders on everything else - some understeer on wet roundabouts if you go in too fast, some wheel hopping when parking, lots of awesomeness when sideways, good fun grip driving on B-roads.
