    Going directly in to the head casting? Makes no sense to me?

    Most likely water lines to/from the head. Weld up the deck for greater strength/sealing and run external lines to/from the head for cooling.
    Esp as one pipe heads towards the rad and the other to what looks like a swirlpot.

    Or if those Lima heads have EGR ports there as standard for emissions it could be used as an EGR ALS setup, but that looks unlikely.
