if you past your normal test (no trailer test) in the last 10 years then you are limited to towing 750 kg's max, this includes the weight of the trailer, regardless of what car you are driving at the time.

i have an L200 that can tow 3.5t, went to indespension to rent a trailer to pickup a shell and was told the above. I was pretty bummed, rented a lwb dropside tipper and got the shell in no bother

Budget is downwards of £1500 please

I really like the look of a surf but the 3.0 seems to be a lil more than the 2.4's

Seriously read replies in this thread :wack:

Where did you get that info from, do you have an official source I can look at, (and then print and keep in our vans!), as I've only ever read it's the plated weight that counts.

It is plated weights that they go off, VOSA mobile inspection man told me this

Doesn't matter if your trailers empty and weighs hardly anything, the trailer is still plated to that weight

I've got 2 Land Rover Discoverys, and tbh wouldn't tow with anything else. I've had Shoguns, L200's, etc.. in the past, and nothing has towed as easy as the LR's

From google a hilux surf can only tow 2.2t legally!

I need minimum 2.5t braked weight - this will be a soarer + trailer weight and tyres etc. am I then looking at pajeros and discos then :(

Have a look on either Autotrader or parkers guide, both will give you towing capacities of most vehicles. They both give average MPG too, Autotrader is slightly better for that as it gives urban and extraurban.

Trader is what I've been using but for imports you have to use google

The jeeps say 2.5t but IMO isn't that a lot for such a small 4x4??

Slow as in pulling a car and trailer up hill however I am considering these now

    Disco 2.5 manual only
    Pajero/shogun 2.8 only
    Hilux surf 3.0 only
Bighorn 3.1 auto or man not sure but there ugly as fook

Whichever comes up closest and best price. I'm not gonna rush but my favourite would be the surf ;)

Best i'd say for sub £1500 is a daihatsu fourtrack, 30mpg all day long in mine, swb and can legally tow 3.5t. Cheap to insure
Very easy to tune too.. Just check inner wheel arches/chasis etc..95 on have coil springs(not leaf springs) and drive
more car like and have much better interiors than earlier ones.. Either way, try a few of your choices and see which
    suits your needs best..

Frontera 2.5 diesel!!! Seen my dad tow the trucks fully loaded up the muddy yard in one when they couldnt get proper grip and he towed a 33' fairlane with it it lifted tge front wheels slightly but did it
should be fine to tow a drift car couldnt you use an a frame to keep weight down?

    Discovery 2.5d manual

Shogun 3.2 turbo mine is slightly newer than you would need but it can tow something like 3.5 tones and i can tell you it can tow anything.

This is mine ( sorry the misses daily) i get to drive it when the bm is broken.

there is literally no comparison between a disco and a 3litre surf, the surf is better in every way, and wont break down every week. my girlfriends dad and brother both have discos, they spend more time in my workshop than in there possesion, whereas the surf hasnt ever needed repairs in the whole time i have owned it.
