As the title says,I have purchased a 316 compact. The engine is on its way out so picked it up very cheap. I am looking to replace the engine with something different. Still BMW but larger capacity and hopefully a straight swap. This is my first drifter so not going to make this to complex and replace the engine myself.

    Any advice ?

On searching the 328 engine seems to be most popular. Is this the best route ?

Turbo rotary or LS1 swap. Or this:

But really, M50b25 or M52b28 are the solid choices.

The 3 above are to expensive. I am considering a v8 from a 540 but have the issue of the sump being at the front. So would need a sump and oil pickup from an alpina b8. Rare as fvck and not cheap. Not unless I get a sump fabricated but then it starts getting expensive again. Want this car to be enjoyable and not worry if I break something.

Is there any reason to go for the 2.8 engine over the 2.5 ?
My car is a 1999 316i. What year of engine can I go up to ? Also will I need gearbox ect for conversion ?

Ive a 2.5 M50 motor sitting in a car, you could come and take everything you needed from it for £250 quid. Depends how far from stoke you are.
