i just finished putting lock spacers on my mx5. there about 7mm either side and gave plenty of lock.
but when i went to adjust the trackrod ends to get rid of all the toe out i found that the drivers side trackrod end was already threaded all the way in and i dont have enough threads left on the passenger side to get rid of all the toe. theres no chance id bring the car on a road to a garage like this cos its just all over the place and its not insured, taxed or nct,d(mot)
only solution i can think of is to just cut a bit off the trackrod ends. or can i buy shorter ones?
and then adjust them both at the same time untill they feel straight.
anyone else ever come across this?
    cheers,
    shane

Is the rack centred? Problem we found first time was the rack wasnt, so we ran out of thread. Only after checking the other side and realised we had loads did we twig that the rack was miles off centre.

thats what i was thinking because the passenger side had a good 20mm of thread and it also looked like i had alot more lock on that side too. how do i centre the rack then?
i dont have any alignment gear here im just doing it trial and error so its good enough to bring it to be tracked properly.

edit: googled it there. seems simple enough. il centre the rack tomoro and see if that helps

I dont know of any other way other than winding the arms both in all the way, then setting up the tow by adjusting them equally. If the steering wheel is wildly out, remove and put it as close to 12oclock, then adjust track rods equally to center wheel.

just measured how much of the rack sticks out at full lock on either side. one side comes out 5mm other than the other.
would i still need to centre the rack for the 5mm difference?

Yet you have 20mm difference in tie rods?

    Doubt its 5mm out.

Easiest way to centre a rack, get in the car, go all the way left, then go all teh way right counting how many turns, divide by 2, place wheel where it is at that number, ignore spokes, use tape on the wheel and tape on your column.

If your lucky it will be a nice even number.

    definitly 5mm out.
turns out my chassis is bent :( actually sickened because i wanted to keep this car.
just going to cut 1 trackrod end or take out lock spacers and drive it on til it dies.
thanks for all the info though.

Meh, who gives a toss, its a skid car?

It'll get bent further down the line anyway, if its passed MOT's as it is then it'll continue to pass mot's

    shorten one tierod,, done :p

    suppose your right haha
f*ck it .. would hate to wreck a mint one. just means i dont have to worry about crashing it anymore cos its f*cked either way.
il just cut 7mm off the drivers side trackrod end and get it steering straight.

can buy them in the driftworks shop or just buy 16mm washers and grind them down so they fit down into the rack.
get alot more lock and supposed to make mx5's way better for sliding about.
didnt get to test mine out yet.
going cutting trackrod ends today haha

naw there simple to fit just
    pull off the 2 dustboots
bend back the big washer that covers the inner tierod nut thing
screw the inner tierod out of the rack
    fit spacers
    reset the toe.

will all make sense when you see it
