2nd build on here, my first was an MX5; http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-car-projects-builds/230320-98-mx5-mk1-na8-drifted.html Anyhow, Long story short, I bought this car almost a year ago, Some may recognise it, I had it for maybe 2 months, it was to replace the mx5, but had too many problems so shunted it on and continued to drift the mx5. After a year behind the mx5, I wanted an upgrade and the guy I sold this onto sold me it back at a good price as it needed work, He had kindly replaced the gearbox which gave in on me, however it had now starting problems. Well I got it back and started work straight away. This car already has a pretty decent spec, Metal bushed rear subframe, KAAZ diff, Driftworks arms, Cooling, and loads more, but I'll be replacing much of the other stuff unmentioned so no need to go into it all, First job was to fit the seat and steering setup from my mx5. It's a large seat, but it's at a comfortable position and I'm able to use it on the street with no issues. First off, stripped the front and started trying to get the front light support bar straight as the headlights were all over the place, They were also very broken and I managed to locate new headlights and a grille for very cheap, which you can see later on the car. I slowly started prepping each part of the engine bay and front and spraying them gloss black just to tidy it up, I did get majority of the rear of the engine but after that photo was taken The long process of prepping the car... Then waiting for paint... Threw some paint on the helmet while impatiently waiting... Gloss black went on. [ After the black went on, using some Poundland kids glitter (lots of packs) I used the gold tubes and mixed it with the first clear coat, then that would be followed by two more clear coats to build up over the glitter flakes...✨ So yeah I thought it looked pretty good afterwards... And then I rolled it outside ... When the sun hits this thing it's awesome. Well in my opinion haa So the car sat up until I sorted the other problems and got it through a MOT. Not going into detail about how I fixed the wiring but it wasn't anything big, just many little things..
-Continued- Some kitchen latches for the rear boot as a previous impact had damaged the lock and this was a simple solution... Before MOT day, I was using someone local to wire in a rear number plate light as I didn't have anything at all. He also helped with some of the exhaust gaskets, but for some unknown reason, when it was picked up and on its way to my lockup to get further work regarding MOT, the wheel came off as the wheel studs snapped. Thus ripping into the fibreglass over arch. There was no reason for the wheel to have been touched, and I certainly know there were correct beforehand, however what's done is done and I have an idea what happened but ohwell. Here's my fix; Means I shouldn't be shy on track now... Rear studs were changed both sides for new OEM ones. After some adjustments and a failure due to a leaking exhaust, which in turn I bought a new elbow and downpipe, then welded holes that had been caused from too many lows, then new gaskets everywhere, meant it passed its MOT with no advisories... Surprisingly. Moving on... Just over a week later, car died on me at a round about first time I actually took it out, Immediately I had a rough idea. The car has had the loom relocated over the arch, however it wasn't the tyre that was rubbing, the harness was chaffing against the edge of the hole it enters through. So I made the repairs required, taped it all up, then a thick layer of bubble wrap around the harness then an additional layer of tape. Don't think it will be running through anytime soon. No problems since anyway! New nuts, oh and new wheels too! Pretty much ready for drifting through the winter now, Need a full aero kit and another set of these wheels in same specs, and slight spacer adjustment to make rears sit better, But I'm not far from my aim. I have a fair few parts sitting waiting to fit, so more updates to follow.
looking good bro, liking the idea of the paint but cant really tell how it looks seeing as you took all the photos on a calculator...
Yeah iphone is pretty shit for photos I must say, once I get kit sorted girlfriend will get better pictures with her camera But the sparkle is pretty cool considering its kids glitter haha
So iv done a little more to this car this week, After a brief Streeto after no seat time on track in like 6 months, inevitably I clipped a bank at 40ish mph, destroying the front bumper. Oh dear. So ordered up a new one but ended up getting full kit and new front wings, Spent the day spraying , wings and rear bumper came out great, however by time I got to clear coat on front bumper and skirts it was getting cold, and moisture got trapped and as a rest has faded the laquer badly, So I'll try cut top player off then give it another coat another day, but this will do for now. Wheels got some treatment too As you can see, what I mentioned about the laquer and moisture fading the bumper and skirts... And also missed the inside of the rear bumper! Ha, least the paintwork is something I can just touch up if I have an off... Or more of when I have another off! Not far away, but still needs tons of work!
So I had to give the car a good shakedown, so with my mate in his 1JZ Vertex Soarer we hit the road midday - midweek in scottish mountain roads! Had plenty of oppertunities to destroy the new Aero, between sheep and massive mounds of roadkill, even all the moments we cought air hitting bumps in the road too quickly! Ha None the less car survived and I was really amazed how it performed, and more how far it's came since picking it up only months ago. Few more things to do, drift day end of the month, can't wait. Also picked up another 6x Rota RKRs in exact same specs all round... So I now have 10 of these... perfect to throw some drift tyres on! Add me on Instagram for more @C10THW
amazing colour , i like that mate at first I thought you had bought watanabe wheels lol your tires are purpose is what size?
Cheers man, yeah their Rota copies, don't think Wats come in those sizes anyway, they work though and the first set I bought already had new tyres stretched into them their 9.5J wheel with 205/45/R17 tyres, I'll be sticking to the same sizes for the following 6 that should be here today. away to get spacers for the rear so it sits similar with the front
Its actually really hard to photo, Iv got videos that show it really well, but photobucket is being unhelpful
you say your rear wheel studs snapped? I've had the same issues recently, to the point where it was held on with one stud flapping around. I've put this down to zipping them on with an air gun, i stopped doing this ive had one snap on me since.....
Funnily, I put new studs in, but they have came loose since, kinda weirded out by it. Studs are fully in, their good wheel nuts, their on tight. could misalignment cause this? I'll get it aligned and see if it stops this
Not much of an update, been offshore since the drive with the Soarer, but night before I left I washed the car and girlfriend snapped a few photos, here's a few; I really like this next one, Looking forward to getting home and sorting the kit, getting the colour to match better and better fitment lines, then spray the other 6 Rotas that are sitting then get some 30mm spacers for the rear Planning on hitting a drift day in November hopefully between offshore jobs, More to follow once I'm home
