Iv Not long been drifting and i bought a bmw e36 323i to learn with. iv noticed that when im accelerating harshly throught the rev range my car seems to bog out at around 4k-5k revs then it pulls like a train. i beleive that this is when vanos kicks in and i have been doing some research and it sounds like it could possibly be the Crank position sensor. has anyone got any ideas...
I might be wrong but I don't think it will be able to start if the crank sensor is gone. It can start on a bad/gone cam sensor, but will take a couple of turns to start as it's trying to "guess" where the cam is. And will be a little more noisy on idle as it's injecting fuel on both in the inlet and exhaust stroke. Sounds like a Vanos issue, which could be the solenoid or the seals, any rattles from the vanos unit? I would suggest investing in a some diagnostic software, it will save you a whole lot of cash in the long run for the sake of £30 - - - Updated - - - What's the power band like after the initial hesitation after ~4.5k?
i did get a new cam position sensor and it didnt make the slightest diffrence what so ever. there isnt any rattles coming from the vanos unit and after the flat spot it picks up and pulls really well. im looking into this on going issue and its thrown up some other suggestions such as clogged fuel filter or clogged fuel pump, spark plugs or coil pack may be dodgy... a friend of mine has a fault code reader and we plugged that in and it threw up a few codes such as 6th coilpack Maf and one other that wasnt related in the slightest. we cleared the codes, and checked it again a few weeks down the line and the codes where still clear nothing came back up...
Check for air leaks first before spending anymore money, if all ok I would suspect that it a vanos issue possibly solenoid.
If its throwing a maf code I would suspect that, see if you can swap it with a known working one. Does it idle smooth?
yeh it idle's spot on no problem what so ever with the idle. and it threw up the code and i got it cleared. if there was a problem with the MAF it would of thrown it back up surely?
Yeah i have scanned it recently and it hasnt thrown a code back up. just waiting to get some time to look for any air leaks as someone has suggested
