Was having a few beers with a couple of mates, and we got on to discussing whether it would be possible to build a bunch of half fun cars to go and do skids with next year. Basic rules were; - Under $2k - S chassis base (or R chassis modified to maccy strut) - Cage is included in budget, but no other safety items - Has to be done by February for a Calder Park track day - Shit you have laying around does not count towards budget Anyway, this is what I've done. Current Expenditure (Aussie dollars, too hard to convert everything to GBP) Car - $150 Motor - $350 Gearbox - $210 Clutch pressure plate bolts - $5 Cooler piping - $100 Silicon joiners - $60 Air filter - $15 Drive belt - $30 Coilovers - $150 Steel for exhaust $50 Steel for twin intakes $$150 This is the car as I got it. Full of rust and pretty fucked, as you'd expect for the price. But it rolls and was mostly complete except for a missing door, front end panels and steering column. Then it was time to butcher the donor. Sat it in the bay to see how badly it fouled on everything. Naturally being a rear hump sump, it didn't fit the S chassis front sump configuration. Front sumps for these things are stupidly expensive now that everyone is throwing them in Nissans. So I had to make my own with scrap aluminium I got off a mate. It's ugly, and not just because I couldn't be arsed cleaning the aluminium before welding it, but it should work. Bolted the sump up and mocked the motor in place. Then smashed out some quick and nasty engine mounts out of some scrap steel. I'm using a genner Commodore radiator and header tank setup. I have a ton of fabrication gear and could have done a really nice tube front, but I really couldn't be bothered. So I bent some RHS I found in my shed using a basketball hoop. - - - Updated - - - And made the cooler piping Anyway, this is where I'm at after a couple of days. Tomorrow I'll be mounting up the gearbox, doing the exhaust and if I have time, cut and shutting a tailshaft. Hopefully the Exedy clutch won't kill the W58... I don't have any front end panels, so I'm seriously considering doing this; Turns out front turbo was dead, so had to pull it all down.
Had to solve an issue with the rear turbo intake fouling on the clutch master. So made twin intakes for it, because why not? Got the box mounted; I'm back at work and haven't had a chance to touch the car since last Saturday morning, but with any luck I'll have 20 minutes to wire this thing up over the weekend. fknyolo m8
Don't suppose you have it written down how you wired up the push button start with the kill switch? I have no probs wiring up the kill switch just not sure where to put the push button in the ignition circuit and google is not really helping at the moment ....!
All accessories including the starter are connected on the fused side of the system. The only things on the battery side are the alternator charge feed and the battery itself. Then there is a fusible link between the isolation switch and the starter button. I've patched into the factory loom from the starter as a trigger.
Wiring cleaned up and tailshaft made. Anyway now the motor has to come out so I can swap the water pump and paint the bay. Also starting the cage this weekend.
Did some insider trading and managed to score myself a better gearbox and a better shell. Got a 235mm 6 puk clutch to suit a T56 and it matches the W58 push type pressure plate. Combined with a conversion spacer thing I scammed off Skompa years ago as well as an old A340 bellhousing and this happened The shell is a ton neater. No huge rust holes or fuckity paint. Loaded it into the shed with one of the other bunkies to strip down and do the cage. Car was actually really neat and had a full interior. I could have registered it... But I ruined it anyway. I'm so over cars at this point. How people do this shit as a hobby is beyond me.
My potato camera list that was remaining as of last night. Redid the cooler piping now that the car has a front end. Continued the cage Whacked the front brakes on and put the coilovers in. Maxed neg camber off the camber top in an attempt to make the wheels "fit". Didn't work. Then had to make the T56 properly. Used an off the shelf kit, that was a direct fit, and nothing had to be cut the fuck up with a plasma cutter. Fair whack of stuff still to go, and only 5 days until I'm on track. Hopefully the clutch works.
I'm meant to be on track 24 hours from now. New steer rubber. Westlake Goodride RS Hoppers Stoppers dual caliper kit Hydro lines run, battery isolated etc. Potato cam pics, no idea why my phone did this.
