Has anyone experienced drifting a diesel. Recently bought a cheap e46 330d and wondered if it was worth while or if I would be better off changing it for a petrol?
It would be ok for wet skidding with a welder and coilovers or hard springs. Dry would be abit more challenging. Get it mapped will help. The 330d is a good torquey lump. If you want a petrol ive got a 98 328 manual touring e46 for swaps or sale. Has mot runs gd. Just dont use it anymore.
As far as I know the only advantage petrol engines have over diesels is the rev band, diesels make much more torque than the equivalent petrol engine so keeping the wheels spinning shouldnt be an issue.
Crack on , check this oil burner out ! http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...7HGo2Y&usg=AFQjCNG1nQuMAItruYFAPW--hpB5cziSyg
Haha, I've seen videos about black smoke racing before, I'm sure they run Mercedes om606 engines. Unfortunately I don't think my BMW 3l diesel will have quite the same effect!
If you really want power, the 330D engine is ridiculously tunable, 700lbft+ on stock internals no problem at all. The fuck? Ignore the above, a 330D will be fine for drifting wet or dry, you've got 350lbft standard ffs. I've got a 330i shitbox with at least 100lbft less and it's fine, in fact now I've changed to an auto diff and fitted wheels that dont weigh 10 tons like the BMW MV1s, it's really good tbf, surprised me.
Do you know what ratios the auto diffs are? If I'm going to weld it I might as well get an auto diff if the ratios are far better.
Not sure about if 330Ds are over-geared, but 330is are, was fucking awful, but now feels 10 times better with the auto diff. There's a few different ones for 330s, 5 and 6 speed have different ratio diff, as does auto, but what they are I've never looked. If its got the spastic 'sport' tyre setup of 225 front and 255 rear, fuck that off too, understeery snappy shit. 225s all round is bang on. Swapped the 18in heavy as hell MV1s for 17in lower offset Oz Superlegerras which weigh about half as much and felt tons better. - - - Updated - - - Aside from the fact that's US cars only, so doesn't show 330Ds at all in any form, that link is brilliant. But because of that, it's useless.
That's shame :/ 330D auto 2.81 330xD auto 2.93 (does it fit?) Manuals got 2.28, 2.47 my be some more, depends on body and engine. What body type you got, and which engine 181hp or 201hp?
I saw you mentioned the om606, tbh I think the only reason people tune them is because of the mechanical diesel pump, which makes diesel tuning a lot cheaper as you remove the need for an ECU. Big power figures can still be achieved with an electric diesel pump but the costs are higher as you still need the expensive fuel pump, just with the extra costs of the ECU and mapping. Do some digging on google, maybe find a way to put an om606 diesel pump on a 330d block, and you'll be well on the way to silly power figures!
You don't need expensive fuel pumps and blahblahblah on 330Ds. Direct injection diesels are piece of piss to tune and make mega power, no different to petrols really. 420bhp and 750lbft on stock M57N 330D internals. Over 300lbft by 2000rpm, 400lbft by 2300rpm, 500lbft by 2500rpm. That's with a tiny turbo and only 2.5bar boost. Fuel wise, just 335D injectors can do the above. Even stock inlet and E90 330D exhaust manifold. With a bigger turbo and maybe a touch more boost so it could hold 700lbft all the way to 5000rpm instead of dropping a bit, you'd have 530bhp, and likely pull strong till over 5500.
i just started drifting with my 250 turbodiesel (om605 engine). Stock car, 150 hp 280 nm and a welded diff can drift already. With a few mods, maybe around 170hp and some more torque and i can easy drift in dry, second gear, didn´t try the third yet since i´m scared
I didn't know this, my future plans for a mad turbo diesel were entirely based on the om606! Maybe I should look in to BMW engines
although om606 came with mechanical pumps you need the diaphram off an om605. I never knew BMW engines were so tuneable. I will need to look into that a lot more.
My Mrs has an E46 330D which has been decatted and mapped, made over 400lbft apparently, could just be willy waving though as not seen any paperwork. Goes like fuck though.
I know of a guy with an e36 325td with FMIC and the boost tickled, coilovers & welded and it goes round lovely. Does hella burnouts too.
Seems like it would be great for drifting in theory, go find a parking lot and let us know how it does
Diesel are simple to make power all you need is air and fuel more boost more fuel try to burn up as much fuel (less black smoke) raise the compression by decking the head bore and stroke larger valves less restrictive exhaust and gearing it'll help alot on low revving diesels to put all the torque to the ground
