My Srx7 fd drift car build

So a few years back I decided I was sick of having road cars and being restricted by laws and tests so began the search for my first track car. Picked this up and the rest follows

 

Started with weight reduction and prep for weld in cage. Chopped the front end off as i wanted a tubed removable front, removed the boot floor and lightened the doors also.
Dry ice making an unbeliaveable job of the sound deadening a few taps of the hammer and the whole lot pops off clean as a whistle

 

Roll cage spec. I love a good cage. Makes or breaks a track car for me. Decided to go for an X at the rear, roof X so it will qualify for hillclimb spec and Nascar door bars for a little extra elbow room. These fds are tiny inside. Great job my Roco performance although I would have liked the door bars to sit further out into the doors.

Decided to ditch the v8 options and go down the Sr route for 2 reasons. One there a tried and tested engine. My goal was to hit 400bhp and this would easily do that as well as remain very light. Second their so many spares and setups for sr's floating around at the moment it would be easy to upgrade parts at a later stage when more power is wanted.

Massaged the bulkhead back 75mm to better my weight distribution and help with the position of the gear level.

Subframe fabrication to support new sr20 sump and new mounts made up

And so the dreaded cleaning off seam sealer and seam welding begun. Probably the worst task was all the wire wheeling to do this. Very happy with the results tho.

 

Arches tubbed nice and high for clearance

Extra support welding in to tie chassis rails together for some extra rigidity

The diff supports in these fd's can fail under very high loads like clutch kicks in the dry so made up these two seriously strong ones.

 

Sandblasting and priming everything. Seam sealed all the underneath again to avoid any rusting. Would love to have acid dipped the entire thing and dip in galvanise again but budget wouldn't allow it.

 

Colours were a huge decision with the project eventually settled on these. Gold cage. Matt grey chassis inside and out. Thought the contrast would highlight the colourful items. Bright red for subframes and callipers. Cleaned and lacquered all the aluminium rear arms.

Anyone that has owned an fd will know the steering lock as absolutely terrible. Even if you cut and modify the steering knuckle your still limited and the problem is the 4 pots coming in contact with the lower arm. So the only nice solution I could think of with manufacturing complete kits was to modify the lower arm and fabricate new upper arms. These are my new upper ones. I'll have camber and castor adjustment now. Track 75mm wider.

Power flexed every arm in the back. Black series where they were available. Should be nice and tight.

Rear all assembled. Nissan 350z gearbox with sr bell housing welded on with custom one piece balanced prop shaft. Welded diff.

 

Had to modify the sway bar brackets to avoid the new steering racks position. It moved 70mm forward on the modified subframe to avoid the sr's sump.

Calliper avoids coilover now perfectly.

Began tubing front end as well. Started with mounting the new rad inter cooler and oil cooler

Everything now rose jointed so loads of adjustment.

 

Control panel made up with Greddy boost, oil temp and water gauges.

Went with the JD Aerokit bodykit. Seriously wide. Quarters are 100mm and wings 75mm wider than stock. First test fit needed a bit of work.

Love the huge sidesteps with this kit.

 

Bodykit fully fitted. I spent a huge amount of hours getting this fitting perfectly. The bonnet here is the colour I went with. I wanted something a bit different that would Stand out a little. It's a one off maroon I picked from a colour chart. Solid 2k colour no metalic.

Front end tubed. It's very light compared to what I chopped off and it bolts on off.

Fuel cell sitting in place. Will have a lift pump swirl pot and inline main pump with filter. All AN fittings and braided line.

First panels sprayed ready for fitting.

Chassis fully painted ready for fitting of panels.

Plastics for performance 4mm clear driver passenger and rear screen. Drivers has a slider too.

Went for Japan racing jr12s in bronze. 10j rears 9j fronts. No spacers needed for fronts because of my custom arms

 

They are very tight but james Deane fits and he's 6 something as well so you should be ok.

Front end coming along ok. Just need to plump up everything. Because the intake manifold is so close to the bulkhead now I need to modify my clutch pedal and mount a slave cylinder inside the bulkhead on the pedal itself.
