I bought a used turbo, seller told me it was from a S15 (ball bearing) but it needs a rebuild. I have read ball bearing are complicated to rebuild so I'm looking for a new CHRA.

But I'm not sure what model turbo it is, and which CHRA do I need? I think it should be a gt28R

Here I attached some pics, to see if anyone knows for sure

    Thanks for you help

Definitely not a t28r. You can tell from the number of bolts in the compressor housing. Should be six for a t28r.

If I'm wrong someone will correct me soon enough.

There should be an ID tag on it somewhere which if you google that will tell you what it is.

They aren't sold as T28s any more, they are the next frame size up. You will want a GT2560r core if it is indeed one of those.

Stock S13 T25 has a pressure nipple in the compressor housing and the intake snout is one piece with the comp housing, like this one \/

Ah... Well mine has the intake snout bolting onto the compressor housing... Does that means mines not a standard 180SX turbo? Or is that from a CA18?

How can you tell how many bolts are in the compressor housing from the pics anyway???

Plus anyway as mentioned its the turbine side that has 6 bolts

The SR 180sx ran the T25G, a slightly larger turbo than the T25 form the CA18.
The T25G did have the intake snout bolted onto the compressor housing.

S15 Spec R's came with both ball bearing and non-ball bearing turbo's. As mentioned before, the only true way to tell which one you have is by counting the amount of bolts that hold the turbine housing on (6 for the ball bearing core). These BB turbo's are sold today as GT2560R's, so if you're looking for a replacement CHRA (not cheap, mind you) that's the one you're after.

Just look at the oil feed. Roller bearing versions will have a restrictor in the oil feed. Journal bearing t28's don't.

FWIW there are also 2 versions of the ball bearing unit. Ones with inconel wheel fitted to the 6MT models have a small divider between the wastegate port and turbine outlet. Ones fitted to automatic cars are not equipped with inconel wheel and don't have the divider.
