My current plan is to check the bottom end, if the crank is fine and not scored etc and the bearings look ok, then I think i'll put some new bearings in it and then just put it back together. The cam cover is coming off anyway as I have a new VCT sprocket to go on so will check cams at the same time - then run halfords oil through, let it get upto temp and then drain it straight out, do that a few times to hopefully get rid of all of the shit in the oil??

Never dealt with anything like this before but certainly don't want to be stripping the engine back down to bare minimum!

Yea I guess you'll know more when the sump comes off and you can see the crank.

When you cut the oil filter open what did the pleats of the filter look like? they will have caught the majority of the material.
If there's bigger bits in there it's a bad sign.

I didnt unravel the filter itself but I checked most of the pleats by opening by hand and there was no big bits at all, even when I drained the oil there was no substantial bits of anything...

and the engine wasn't knocking or anything when it was last running so can't be that bad!!

So I had a quick look over the crank after Adam stripped it down, and there was some very slight scoring on #1 Big End Journal so I took it to a local machine shop and they polished it for me - at the same time I took my flywheel to get skimmed aswell
    IMG_20200603_135325_copy_1536x2048.

The next day I went and picked them up and took them back to AB - me and Ali spent the next few hours checking clearances with Plastigauge and building the bottom end up
    IMG_20200603_174900_copy_1536x1152.

Came back the following day and built the rest of the engine up with the help of Adam and Ali - also fitted the new Mishimoto 68 degree thermostat and the Tomei N2 Oil Filter Housing adapter for -10 AN Lines to run to a relocation plate
    IMG_20200604_100856_copy_1536x1152. IMG_20200604_214453_copy_1536x1152.

Finally we got it built back up fully - after this my mum came round again in her van and we hauled it in there and back to mine!
    IMG_20200604_144120_copy_1536x2048.

Back at mine, before the engine went in - I wanted to swap out the front subframe bolts. Since I built it I've always had big allen key headed bolts - bit of a pain - so I finally decided to buy the nissan ones that are supposed to come with the car.
    IMG_20200604_161818_copy_1536x2048. IMG_20200604_171144_copy_1536x1152.

I decided to order a new clutch aswell - my current one was a random mis-match of parts, it never seemed to engage right and the clutch pedal itself was mega heavy.

After looking around and speaking with a few friends, I decided to go for an Xtreme Stage 2 jobby - still a sprung single plate flywheel which is exactly what I wanted
    IMG_20200605_102255_copy_1536x2048. IMG_20200605_112345_copy_1536x2048.

    Bolted up the 350z box
    IMG_20200605_113526_copy_1536x1152.

Threw it in the car... (by throw I mean spend 3 hours shouting and swearing because it wouldn't just drop in, luckily my mum called round and socially distanced helping me get it in the car millimetre by millimetre - WHAT A PAIN!
    IMG_20200605_151254_copy_1536x2048.

Once that was done it was a case of plumbing everything back up and replugging all the plugs back in etc - although one thing I needed to do was make -10AN Lines for my new oil filter relocation/cooler setup. This was all fairly straightforward once I got my head around it - but since I have the fusebox and battery in the standard position - finding somewhere to mount the relocation plate was a bit of a pain...
    IMG_20200605_201204_copy_1536x2048.

That was one of the last pieces of the puzzle and I was getting more and more nervous to fire it up for the first time...

Throughout all this time of fitting the engine and putting it all back together - Amy was in the garage helping me and it was mega nice! With her being pregnant she can't really help much unfortunately, especially being under the car etc etc - so doing engine bay stuff she can get involved and it was nice to have a helping hand!

Just before doing that though, I had another problem to attend to... On its way into the bay - the adapter plate had caught the top hose on the rack and snapped it off - great...
    IMG_20200605_204542_copy_1536x1152.

Luckily sourced another one locally within a few hours and had it fitted.

Then it was the fun job of trying to tighten the -10AN Lines that go onto the block adapter plate - with no real easy way to access them - I managed to find a gap infront of the front subframe between the alternator and engine mount - boom! Although it required a special tool... IMG_20200606_085304_copy_1536x2048.

Out came the grinder and I made this concoction - the V I cut out in the end of it was so I could put the pry bar in and tighten the fitting against the alternator bracket - works a treat!
    IMG_20200606_085314_copy_1536x2048.

Then it was first start-up time...

All went smoothly! I bought some cheap 10/40 oil and ran 2 lots through the engine - letting it get upto temp and then draining it out, both with fresh filters, and then after that I put some fresh Driven DT50(5w50) stuff and a new filter on.

Then I hit the track - Went to Three Sisters yesterday for my 2nd drift day since all this COVID stuff kicked off - it was real fun! Turned up and had a pretty severe power steering leak - luckily Harry and Adam managed to sort it for me - the banjo I have is way too big, but its the exact same setup I've had for the past 2 years so I'm not sure why its started now...

The car felt pretty good, but it was far from my best driving - pretty average tbh!! I wasn't fully feeling it and I think I've put it down to spending 27 hours over 2 days on the car having constant late nights - I was shattered! None the less I had fun!

I ended the day early though as my turbo to manifold nuts kept falling off - despite having locking nuts and the genuine nissan tabs that you fold down and hammer over the nuts - so I've now ordered K Nuts that are using in aerospace environments - apparently they are impossible to vibrate loose...we shall find out!

The new Xtreme clutch is also amazing - the pedal is so light and very nice to drive now! No more having to use all the power in my leg to change gear haha, and quick clutch kicks no longer feeling like I'm working out!

So far there has only been 1 picture but its a cracker!!
    FB_IMG_1591594947844.

The next day I'm booked on for is the 15th at Teesside so hopefully have my turbo issues sorted for then!

Ahhh cheers @Fraser Mac - will these help with accessing my turbo nuts? They are a bit of pain to get to with me still retaining the standard positioning for the turbo... :smash:

A few pics from the last 3S Day
    DSC_0935. DSC_0207_copy_2227x1299. DSC_1054_copy_2227x1358. 20200607-D50_8426_copy_2227x1485. 4S6A6223_copy_2098x1399.

This is definitely my favourite static shot of the car!! Looks like something you'd see on Speedhunters...
    4S6A5130-Edit_copy_2098x1398.

Following on from my last update where my day at 3S got cut short due to the Turbo to Manifold nuts coming loose, I got to replacing my turbo to manifold nuts/studs and gasket on my break when I was on nights(I get a 2 hour break, and currently WFH means I can nip into the garage when im on nights and get 2 hours solid on the car! Bonus!)

Part 1 - Remove the exhaust nuts to take the downpipe off the turbo...
    IMG_20200611_024400_copy_2048x2730.

Part 2 - Cry because the nuts you only fitted less than a week ago seized and snapped the stud in the turbo exhaust housing :smash:
    IMG_20200611_031039_copy_2048x2730.

Part 3 - Remove the turbo whilst wiping the tears away using 80 grit sand paper because thats what it feels like everytime you try and fix this damn thing.
    IMG_20200611_031007_copy_2048x1536.

Part 4 - Take it to Adam @ AB Auto-works for him to remove the stud and save your life 3 days before you're due back out on track.
    received_263411571576292.

Part 5 - Run a tap down the threads to make sure they're clean and to prevent any of this happening in future (hopefully....)
    IMG_20200612_020621_copy_2048x2730.

Part 6 - Put it all back together again 24 hours later than planned with no issues and fresh new locking nuts that will hopefully never ever ever come loose again.
    IMG_20200612_033831_copy_2048x1536.

Also bought myself a timing gun - Martin advised that since the timing chain has been off and the CAS has been removed and re-fitted that I was best checking the Base Timing to make sure it was correct. Using an old HT Lead I checked it all was fine as expected which was a relief! Good for piece of mind though, and this timing light was £20 from Amazon - bargain.
    IMG_20200612_123443_copy_2048x2730.

Then took Madam out for a drive to make sure all was ok, also to put some road miles on the new clutch to bed it in more before its 2nd outing, I think she enjoyed it
    IMG_20200613_130001_copy_2048x2730.

    Then it was Teesside time!
    FB_IMG_1592406223374.

Car was running real good and I felt really comfortable in the car, I didn't get any pictures at all on the day and there was no photographers allowed, but Amy and a few other friends there got some videos and pictures.

Did some laps with Danny - First time I've drove with him but we have similar driving styles so It was good fun playing kiss chase!
    IMG-20200616-WA0002. IMG-20200616-WA0001.

Also got a bunch of videos...

Big track solo run - entering at the top of 4th (350 Box with 4.1 Diff ratio - No idea on actual speed) felt pretty lairy!

Chasing David in his 3UZ Powered IS200

Another run on National with Brad trying to keep up in his almost bog standard 350z haha

And this is the smaller track at Teesside called West Track - a good little fun technical track, 2nd and 3rd gear stuff - I wish more drivers enjoyed this track as I prefer it over the big track!

I did sustain some damage unfortunately but nothing major, all cosmetic!
    IMG_20200616_123335_copy_2048x1536. IMG_20200616_123342_copy_2048x1536. IMG_20200616_123315_copy_2048x1536. IMG_20200616_123322_copy_2048x1536. IMG_20200616_123325_copy_2048x1536.

Pictures don't quite show it but the pass rear quarter is pushed in quite far so will need some wood and hammering to get back straightish :smash: was chasing Harry and his car bogged down and straightened and my back end went straight into his... I came off alot better than his

Also found out that Injector #2 is leaking which I think is down to when I built the engine up I didn't put any lubricant on the o-rings so they might have been nipped and now leaking, so I'm going to remove them and put some fresh o-rings on with alot of lube - been told I can use vaseline so thats the way forward for me!

Next drifting is booked for 18th/19th July Weekender back at Teesside, already looking forward to it :dw:

The drivers front corner had a slight graze on its 2nd outing haha - so 4/4 completed it mate!
    IMG_20200624_080333_copy_1536x1152.

Done a few little bits on the car - The past 2 drift days I've noticed that after the car has been sitting for a few days, when you start it, it misfires for about 30 seconds and then clears up and no further issues - bit odd, only thing I could think of is that when I fitted the new injectors and o-rings etc, I didnt put any lube on the o-rings, so they might have been nipped as they've gone in and slowly got worse and when the cars sat around fuel is getting into the cylinder...
    IMG_20200617_195514_copy_1536x2048.

Whipped off the top half of the inlet and removed the fuel rail
    IMG_20200617_204450_copy_1536x1152.

Took all of the injectors out one at a time and put fresh o-rings on them all with Vaseline as a lubricant then put it all back together
    IMG_20200617_224046_copy_1536x2048.

Also purchased some Nismo engine mounts as my current polybushed ones are horrible - the whole car vibrates and everything shakes - Had them 3 years and got a bit fed up of them, and this set of Nismo mounts came up cheap second hand!
    IMG_20200620_144701_copy_1536x1152.

Fairly straight forward getting them in - just having to loosen everything - subframe, steering rack, then jack the engine up etc
    IMG_20200620_172747_copy_1536x2048.

Car idles sweet now with no rattles or vibrations which is nice!

Next up - I want some more camber upfront but ever since I got these coilovers(2nd hand) they had snapped studs in the top mounts so I was already at the limit - decided to remove the top mounts and sort them out

    Passenger side removed
    IMG_20200622_185029_copy_1536x2048.

    Heat her up IMG_20200622_185050_copy_2048x2730.

    Pliers
    IMG_20200622_185717_copy_2048x2730.

Back in - MAX CAMBER :dw:
    IMG_20200622_194438_copy_1536x2048.

Drivers side wasn't so simple - took it to Adam @ AB Auto-works for him to remove the 2 studs again(This is becoming a regular thing)
    IMG_20200622_195429_copy_2048x1536. received_264773871522836.

Then it was onto the task of trying to get my rear quarter back straight again after the little tap at Teesside :smash:
    IMG_20200624_131749_copy_1536x2048.

Used the Tiguan's tow bar and a ratchet strap to pull most of it back out
    received_195459225127100.

Then tidied it up with a hammer and some wood - came out alright I think?
    IMG_20200624_135724_copy_1536x2048.

Treated her to an oil change - more Driven DT50(15w50)
    IMG_20200620_175417_copy_1536x2048.

A topic I brought up on Facebook regarding what fluid to use in the cooling system was discussed and I have decided that instead of running coolant - I'm gonna try De-ionised water and water wetter - the problem with running coolant/anti-freeze etc is that its flammable and some tracks dont allow it to be used as its worse than oil to clean up apparently if any is spilt on track... So I've got a bunch of this stuff and will put it in the car sometime in the future - never know, might even drop temps? o_O
    IMG_20200617_213503_copy_1536x2048.

Oh - fresh cable ties turned up - the girls chose the colour. Honest.
    IMG_20200625_184953_copy_1536x2048.

I'm booked on to Norfolk Arena on 4th July which I'm looking forward to - Only ever driven there once and it was for Driftcup last year - few small things to do before then but nothing major.

Smallish update with many rubbish pics as always

Before Norfolk I did a few things. First up was wash the car - it was filthy... (Check out the front wheels...)
    IMG_20200630_153214_copy_2048x1536. IMG_20200630_203910_copy_2048x1886.

Then a new radiator cap arrived from Mishimoto (1.3 bar compared to my current 1.1 bar) - the reason for the change was when my car gets upto 95 degrees roughly, the cap can't hold the pressure so lets water out of the overflow pipe...but thats snapped off my radiator so coolant goes allllllll over my engine bay not ideal.
    IMG_20200630_115315_copy_2048x2730.

Also drained all the current coolant from the engine/coolant system and filled it with the de-ionized water and water wetter I mentioned in the previous post.
    IMG_20200630_141435_copy_2048x2730.

Then nipped over to SP Motorsport (Eclipse Motorsports Alignment machine was down ) - got the car dialled in with a bit more grip
    IMG_20200702_112800_copy_2048x2730.

Also managed to borrow another VCT Solenoid whilst I was there to see if that was my issue (Fitted a known working second hand VCT solenoid and it started rattling almost straight away...) Fitted it when I got home and no difference so I dont think its the solenoid - think I'm gonna have to save some pennies and go down the brand new route...
    IMG_20200702_143657_copy_2048x2730.

Then went to Norfolk for another practice day :smash: First time doing a practice day there (only done 1 comp day previously there...) Really good fun and loads of seat time - I think next time I will try and arrange for a few mates to go so we can go out together...
    FB_IMG_1594330198242_copy_2048x1359.

Also another bonus about Norfolk - I managed to take Scarlett out on track drifting for the first time!! So happy! :blowkiss:
    IMG_20200704_142520_copy_2048x2730.

Her emotions were all over the place o_O
    IMG_20200716_085051.

I made a quick video on the ol UToob

It didn't go mega smoothly - on our 2nd outing Minnie had a spin in front of us and I didnt stop in time so we nudged her - and then a few laps later I ran over my own front splitter...
    IMG_20200704_153856_copy_2048x1536.

Ended the day all well and good and then made the 3 hour journey home with a quick stop at Maccies for tea!

Once home I got the front splitter back on held together with pink cable ties of course... IMG_20200706_200946_copy_2048x1536.

Norfolk did some weird things to the Kendas though - never seen anything like this - this was the drivers side tyre - so the OUTSIDE is at the top?! You can even see the wire at the top of them...
    IMG_20200706_123300_copy_2048x1536.

The lads over at BDC asked me to pop over as they wanted to do some sort of interview? :worthy: So had a nice drive over in the 13 - Video will be coming soon on BDC Insider - if you haven't already go and sign up
    IMG_20200709_142454_copy_2048x1536.

After I got home I thought I would adjust the damping on my front coilovers...
    IMG_20200706_203058_copy_2048x2730.

Guess thats a NO then - more things to add to the never-ending list

Also upgraded my steering wheel - Nothing wrong with the Nardi, just fancied a change and thought I'd give Suede a go - so a Sparco R323 ordered - Nardi is for sale (Listed in Parts section)

Drifting at Teesside this weekend - although tonight I'm going to a friends and we are pulling the gearbox out because ever since I've had it fitted, everytime I've gone to grab 1st, the car has always moved forward slightly and then gone into gear, like the clutch is grabbing ever so slightly... Hopefully going to fix that so there is no more issues going forward - I mean if its not fixed then no Teesside I guess...
