Okay yep, I'm giving it up! :D The M5 V10 engine is destined for my E46 M3 daily.

We've been super busy at Driftworks with the new place, and the start of the season, but in my spare moments I've been doing a load of research, and I've started getting a few bits together. Things are now starting to progress, and what started as the most intimidating engine conversion I've taken on, is starting to come together (in my head at least).

The car as it is now:

There are a few of these conversions already out there in the world, but finding any information other than a picture or two has proven to be nigh on impossible.
I love my BMW, but I've got to say: It's a different world. There's not a great deal of hands on people out there, and BMW tuners really aren't keen to give up information and help people like they are in our scene.
I aim to change that! I will disclose whatever I can here in this thread, and I think with the whole 'what goes around comes around' ethic we have here within the Driftworks community, you guys will almost certainly help me out with this mammoth conversion too!

    Things I've learnt so far:
Rumours of the E39 M5 gearbox fitting are bollox.
Rumours of the S85 M5 engine weighing 70kg more than the E46 engine are bollox. It weighs 5kg more than the E46 engine based on a combination of BMW released stats and my own findings with a set of quality Intercomp scales.

What I've learnt for myself (and I'll update this a lot as I have a lot to learn) :
The E90/92/93 6 speed manual bolts straight up without a single modification. My research showed that the S65 V8 in the E90 is derived from the S85 V10, but until I bolted up the gearbox it was one very expensive gamble.
The M5 twin plate clutch fits into the bell housing and using an M5 release bearing (£120  ) It all seems to go together as stock. (whether the clutch pedal feels like stock or not I don't know :wack:.

    So the plans:
After such a pleasant experience having the Syvecs ECU fitted to the Driftworks S15, I'm planning on having a Syvecs ECU run this engine, but there's a few potential issues to iron out before I confirm that.

I'm going to the Nurburgring again at the end of May, so I'm keeping the car stock for that. But once it's back, I'll be pulling the engine and box, then we'll work out any physical fabrication modifications like engine mounts, crossmember mods, gearbox mounts, prop etc, and then move on to the pipework/cooling modification and fab, then wiring (my worst enemy).

I'm not under any disillusion about how long it will take to complete this, or how difficult it's going to be. I think I will be daily driving my lowrider for a while :wack:. But it's done now, I'm commited to making a 550bhp NA screamer daily driven and practical supercar! :smokin:.. So wish me luck :D

I'll leave you with the first picture of probably a few.
M5 v10 on the scales showing 261kg with all ancilleries, manifolds, cats powersteering, alternator, aircon pump, flywheel, clutch etc.

    Awesome project!

Gearbox fitting is a proper piece of luck to! that could have been a right stumbling block.

    I think i'm most impressed it'll be a daily nice car to:thumbs:
