Ok so this is my lovely nismo Fly wheel. So ive herd its ok to get Lightened flywheels reskimmed, However some people have said if there is evidence of heat penetration to the back then its not advisable? does anyone know this for sure? I wasnt getting Clutch judder or any problems really. Pics. also - Does anyone know if a Fly out of a bent cam Black top SR will fit in a Strait cam red top?
I'm no flywheel expert, but that would certainly look like heat penetration to the back with my eyes.
I'd say thats fairly normal looking for a drift car, if it was'nt causing any issues bolt it back in.
Are you putting anew clutch on? if not just bolt it back in, if you are then get it skimmed. cant see taking a few 0. of mm off it will drastically weaken it. Id give i a check over for cracks though. You should replace the flywheel bolts though. Get ARP bolts as they are cheaper and reusable.
Is changing the bolts really required? The heat marks do look drastic! I wasn't having problems a mew clutch is going in, I'm just debating the best route. Since money's tight I'm thinking just skim this and give it a go, worst case? I get some clutch judder and I stick a stock one in?
If you are fitting a new clutch just get it re-faced and it will be fine. And yes all SR flywheels (except S15 Spec-R) are the same.
looks like a serious amount of heat has been passed through that. it might be ok, but i would be very wary especially if your running high power and/or giving it loads of abuse. Is there any evidence of micro fractures on the area where the heat is ?
My flywheel looked like that after 2 drift days as i had the wrong clutch. it was also covered in high spots. i sent it back to the company i bought it from the they resurfaced it. The chap said the blueing was nothing to worry about.
as for changing bolts, personaly i always do and you are supposed to on a lot of cars as there stretch bolts, and also use a bit of thread lock. have to check if thats the case for SR's have to admit, thats only really because someone once told me to so it could well be an internet myth, not like you often hear about flyhweels exiting the car, but then the thought of that happening is enough to make it worth while!
ive always put new ones in a creamed them with thread lock as said above... and id imagine there would be a lack of legs if the flywheel did decide to exit..
Got to be careful with putting too much thread lock on flywheel bolts man, they could stop the bolt from sitting all the way in its thread or even run down behind the flywheel and make it sit off-square.
Anyone got any idea how to get the pins out there hard in there and there hard, nothing the machine shop try will grip!
ok so got a standard but surface rusty or the nismo but still with a ruined/scored surface. Im thinking about putting the standard one in. do i need to get rid of the surface rust? also for completeness the Nismo one is 2.6KG lighter!!
Mine stretched and a couple sheared before they reached the torque. Yes they are ment to be replaced. The arp ford 4.6 bolts are about 40 from here Ford Mod 4.6/5.4 flywheel bolt kit - PartBox Performance and Tuning Parts you can reuse them multiple times. The Nissan ones are over £60 for the set and ment to be one use. It's a no brainier really.
If it's too badly burnt, you can smell the surface of the flywheel and it will smell like fire / soot. It looks burnt to me which means it's scrap. Hope this helps.
