Well I bought this car back in December from Ireland.Pockets, sills, floor and underneath were mint which was important. Anyway after a series of issues including starter motor and electrical problems I decided the best thing to do was to put her in the shed and strip her down.

After removing the carpets and seats, I noticed the carpet was soaking wet, this being a result of holes on either side of the inner arches, which was the start of the the rust issues lol. The floor I must say was very solid and relieving to see no rot.

With the help of my father we are going to fully restore the shell to its former glory and give her a respray, and prepare her for drifting.Anyway I will let the pictures do the talking.

[IMG]This is right off the boat, and parked into the garage for a full inspection.
Then after much head scratching we decided to get the grinders out lol. Wanting to go as light as possible we removed the original tank and cut the boot floor out, with the intention to space-frame the rear.

And as the back panel was rusty we decided to take it off and give it a spruce clean.

[IMG]Here is a picture of the tank from Grp 4 Fabrications, who now make ae86 bits which is great news as their escort bits are known the world over for their quality.

Here is the swirl pot which is built into the tank.

Arch repairs. We cut a section along from the inside and joined the two with a sheet that looks factory. Etch primed and shutz will be the finish.

This is our custom exhaust which is made up of a Jasma 4-2-1 manifold, with an ashley middle to backbox with a custom 2.5 rolled tip which comes out through the bumper.
Heres a better picture, also under the tank is custom brackets to mount the tank to, with it's factory straps to retain some of it's original parts.

Cheers twincamtam. Here are some more pictures bringing the build up to date.

With loads of bubbles on the arch I decided to strip it to metal and clean it up.Only in primer at the moment, but when all is repaired it will be sprayed.

    new footplate.

New wheel mocked up to see what it looks like fitted.
Box iron rails fitted for strength fitted horizontally instead of vertically. The idea being able to have much more adjustment on the rails. The rails had to be put into the floor as the twincam floor makes it very difficult to fit side mounts without the seat being too high. We welded up the grommit holes too.

New Pro 2000 seats from Peter Lloyd rallying, with OMP side mounts. Some new superlites for skid wheels too.
Sill stripped to metal, side skirt holes filled.

    primed in rust primer

Pics of grommit holes welded up, and general cleaning.

And here is the right inner rear arch fully repaired finally, just need to grind down the welds with a belt sander.
Clamp for my pump I got from my dads spare Mercedes Cosworth. Should be more than up to the job.
Next job to do is repair the front A pillars. Here is the mess of the passenger side. Its not as bad as I have seen in other twincams.

This looks like a good project. I've always wanted an ae86. I'll be interested to see how it turns out as it progresses

Good work. You may want to speak to Ian over on http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2698&mforum=wwweightsixcouk

He does rallying in his AE86.

Shame about the rust, it is annoying when you feel that the seller hasn't been entirely honest. I would say though if someone says an AE86 is rust free, the default option is never to believe them.

Good luck with the project. :)

Thanks for the info Lauren. I should be in safe hands as my dad has rallied a couple of twincams over the years, and knows his way around them. Loving your trueno btw, the car is a credit to you :)

Yea it seems all the corollas on Donedeal.ie seem to say the shells are mint lol. There are some great projects and cars in ireland though, you should check out ae86irl.com

Made progress on the A pillar, we put in stronger steel and replicated the original lines for that factory look. We will be using tubular bars to brace the front leg also.

Small update. Well, a lot of welding has been done to the car, and were compleately finished welding one a pillar, rear arch and have made a start on the other inner arch by cutting out the bad metal. So once the inner arch is repaired, and small repairs to the a pillar on the drivers side the car will be 100% rust free thankfully  Here are some pictures.

Here you can see the reinforced pieces we made to support the a pillar with thick pieces of steel. It will be stronger than before thats for sure.

Then here is a picture of the final piece welded in.
So we made a start on the other inner arch passenger side. Seeing as we had done the other side we knew what we were doing by now with the arch, so we quickly cut out a strip that went along the arch that connected the lip to the inner arch.

The other sill has been sprayed in rust primer and side skirt holes filled.

Update. Three out of four corners are now finished, so just got to weld in the passenger seat rails, weld the back panel on and finish one more inner arch. Then in theory it's ready for paint :p

here is the finished a pillar repairs. Turned out really well.
We used steel tubing to reinforce the a pillar onto the suspension.

And here is how she stands tonight. The front has been stripped, rubbed down and etch primed.

Looking good there! It's quite interesting to see the shell stripped down on a similar aged Toyota to mine, i think the water traps are all the same too! you may have struck lucky if yours is a non sunroof model as they are a pain in the arse!
Are you keeping the suspension as it is, or have you got plans to upgrade once the shells done?

Yea once you start taking apart one panel, you will eventually be tempted by the other problems and rip the car apart down to the shell :D. Yea thankfully it is a non sunroof, what about your Supra?

I'm going to change the original coilovers to Leda coilovers which I got last month brand new. And I'm going for MCN Sport coilovers for the rear, as they are proven to be very good with plenty options on spring ratings. What suspension have you on the Supra?

Supra's electric sunroof which is crap and leaks and rusts like buggery, I keep looking at using a RA Celica roof panel as it's the same part, just non sunroof and lighter. As for my suspension it's Apex gen1 coilovers from a nissan s13. The top mount pcd is the same
and i designed the 2" sleeves so you could run fully slammed and still have full damper travel. sleeves are 5mm wall and internally threaded . The rears i just used the apex dampers without the springs on as its separate like yours. so got shortened std rearrs and whiteline adj anti roll bars all round.
Bit of a bastard you've bought fronts as i got a few sets of sleeves left still, but you got Leda's now eh!

Considering how mint that car looked in the pics (I remember looking at it at the time) it's amazing what you discover. I didn't strip mine to the amount you did, but I did find stuff that wasn't all that obvious when I bought it (rear pockets and the like). Still, looks like you're doing a fab job on it, keep up the good work and see if you can be sorted to aim for the Ace Cafe meet on the 11th September, would be cool to meet up. :)
