FD run a tyre width to car weight rule.

Think the trick is that the ballast moves/slides changing the way the car would drift

    1200kg on 215's is how i roll....

however, as in all motorsport, its where the weight is thats the key.

Right so you have to have a certain width tyre depending on weight

    So

In order to run wider tyres for grip they add weight but that makes things slower and handle differently due to extra weight

And FD thinks that someone is giving themselves an advantage by ADDING weight !

Am I correct or way off ?

No I think it's because despite making the car heavier the ballast can be put in places where it has a positive effect on the handling/grip so they get better handling characteristics and with the added weight they run wider tires further increasing the handling/grip so the car ends up having an advantage.

Unless they meant the ballast was moving but from what I can see the above should be about right. Same thing with BTCC ballast regs are really strict.

Nice to see a championship that actually follows the rules and checks the cars.. Its only fair on those who play by the rules.

Don't see the problem with this ?

Maybe so but why do it on the last round of the season? Why not at the start or at every round?

Also why only the cars that are in contention for the championship? Why not the whole field if it is just being done to make sure people are following the rules?

I quite like a bit of weight , lol

but for the drag racing of the start line I see the point of the rule.

They can do it any time, the whole point is so you don't know about it otherwise you would remove legal modifications, most forms of motorsport pull in the top of the field for strip down inspection.. if you want to be taken seriously as motorsport it has to be seen to up keep on the rules, only way to stop people cheating and gaining unfair advantages.

If no one has done anything illegal then whats the problem?

I think people are getting the wrong end of the stick.

I've neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr seen a motorsport or race series where adding ballast was illegal. Ballast is normally a given part of it, to get a car up to minimum weight while getting the weight in the most useful weight for them.

By the sounds of this it's cars being 'heavy' due to hidden extra weights for the weigh in, allowing them to use wider tyres, then removing them for the actual competition.

Not allowing ballast to be used to reach any given weight, as long as they don't remove it, is retarded IMO.

Hear what you saying Stavros, but rules are rules aren't they?

If they use more weight to gain a higher tyre width or lower however it works, then they remove it to gain an advantage its not fair on the guy that isn't cheating and an unfair advantage is made, so this isn't actually the problem is it, its the more a case the rule is there in the first place.

I donno I don't have a set of fd rules If anyone has a link now would be a good time to post! Weather any ballast is allowed or if it is and removing it is the issue.

I'm pretty sure he's agreeing with/not arguing your point. I too agree - it's good they're going to this extent to uncover any cheating, but the article is very vague. The random, very specific, info on the positioning of the ballast just serves to fuel to the rumour-mill, and not much else without more solid facts.

It'd almost definitely be this. It's up to you how heavy you want your car, thats the whole point of the tyre width regs. If no ballast at all was allowed, you'd get people welding 1" steel plate to the chassis rails and super thick wall tubing in their cages 'for strength' and all kinds of crafty shit. They are taking it a bit far to be honest though.

Well that's exactly my point, unless there's a set of regs/this is releases, then it's hard to say, like you said if there was a flat no ballast rule then if you were going to do it you would put the weight as low as possible ie. the chassis rails.

If the issue was with people having it and the. Removing it surely they would be able to visually check this as the ballets would have to be in a visible/declared location. And easy to check.

Also if ballast was being taken out for battles then just the normal Motorsport weight bridge after a run would
    Be sufficient?
