(Some, or all, of the title description is a lie btw...) The other week we saw a load of random shit on eBay, was cheap, and cool, but had fuck all use or reason for it, not to mention it was totally unknown stuff in totally unknown condition. Then I thought fuck it, and we went and bought it all for £500. It was a 33 year old V8, a transmission, half of a prop, some manifolds, some fuel shit, some electrical shit, a turbo, and various other things, mostly dirt and cobwebs. It was removed from a 1970s Jaguar XJ Coupe, and the thing is, we didn't have a car to put it in, or a reason to put it in one. So we measured various points on the engine and then I wondered around the scrapyard for an hour with a tape measure measuring anything with a subframe made for an engine with a rear hump sump. Fair few contenders that it looked like it might fit, Carltons/Senators/Omegas, E36/46, and Volvo 240s, but we chose a 940, purely as it was biggest enginebay, so likely to be the least work. £500 later and I had an immaculate, taxed and tested, Volvo 940 2.3 turbo, complete with electric leather heated seats and shit. My mate was confident he could get it all in there no prob, so he took the 2.3 turbo engine out... Stared at them both for a bit... Offered the engine up, made some mounts, and put it in... He then adapted the two props and made them one... We needed an exhaust, but tbh there wasn't loads of room for one, well there was, but it seemed like a ballache to me, so I got a load of old 3in stainless from the shed, cut it up, and went route one, straight out the front wing.. Plumbed the PAS, radiator, etc etc in, fitted a suitable fuel pressure reg, and that was that. Rev counter hasn't turned up yet, haven't checked boost (though it's v.v.low), and we set carb up so far purely by God's will (ie, yeah it sounds 'ok' and not 'too much' black smoke), so not pushed it hard yet, but here's a vid of it's first start n drive earlier... Taken about a weeks work and £1000 quid in parts (inc buying the car) And yes, we welded the diff too.
Manually shifted reverse pattern TH350. 940 turbo brakes are fine, no hard braking in that video. Just remembered the original engine/box/everything, about half a ton of shit, was in the boot still when we drove it lol.
Looks like itll be fun. Reckon it'll make decent power? I picked up a 940 wentworth yesterday and plan to wind up the boost a bit for some tramp skids. Hear they can make decent numbers with different turbos etc but don't wanna spend out.
Should easily make over 400lb/ft without trying, so should be not bad. In my experience of the later 2.3s with the TD04s, if that what your Wentworth is (or are they 2ltr, i dunno), you can literally let them run as much boost as the little turbo can give and they perfectly fine on Super/Optimax, faster than things like mk1 Audi S3s etc like that.
yeah cus arent they the 5 pot engines? earlier version of the focus RS engine etc? got a soft spot for those
No RWD volvos had the 5cyl engine unless it's had an engine conversion. You're thinking of the Volvo T5 engine, front drive.
ahhh, my mistake. i like volvo turbo's, they always seem to be really easy to tune, bit like renault 5 turbo's.. if you know what your doing you can pretty much push the engine to its limit
