E36 - Welder buckets hydro .. Standard drift spec Quick intro on the car, basically one day I thought I want to start drifting so many hours were spent on eBay gumtree and swapz looking for a cheap e36 to skid as I didn't want anything expensive to fix, finally settled for this one. It's a 320 so a little underpowered but it's winter so it does alright in the wet. Leaving the diff unwelded till next year. First on the list is to sort out the arches and trim them back abit and some spacers. As it's a daily I'm leaving the back seats in till I start drift days My old s13
agreed, i know from personal experience in my old e36, OPEN DIFFS DO NOT DRIFT - - - Updated - - - a 1.8 with a welder will though so stop worrying about not enough powerz and get the welder out!
Yh I need a welded diff but I'm just waiting as I need it to get to work and don't fancy a welder through the harsh winter and snow that's supposed to be coming soon. But living only 20minutes from pod it's proving hard not to weld it
If it snows you will get stuck with an open diff in a BM ,weld it up , double your traction and have loads of fun - win win.
real men off-roaders will always run a locked diff, as said, double your traction!! make your daily drive that much more interesting, with this "100 days of snow" we're gona have youll be dori dori by spring!
Yh true. Never thought about it in a logical way lol just thought skids easy with welder is snow will make its skid to much. I'm hopefully collecting a welded diff off a mate soon (been done properly) so will have a spare diff if I need to. Hopefully get some time tomorrow (today) to fiddle with it
Thats the best way to go, with practice and a good jack you can change a diff in 45 mins. ive done it in less when i was in a real rush! Also wanted to add this. Dont want to scare you either but the rubber mounts for diff carrier bolts on the rear can get a little worn, on my car this caused the front carrier bolt to snap, so glad id kept a spare diff then Just make sure you have everything torqued up nicely and recheck the bolts periodically if you're skidding it all the time.
So this finally happened. Find I have a lot more control now Next is bucket seats as I'm sick of having a bruised shin from the centre consol
Looks like MIG to be honest mate, Ive always welded my diffs with a MIG, from anything from a Single Phase 13amp plugged home MIG to our DUO GYS 400V 3 Phase MIG at work ( which is a lovely machine ) and never had a single one of my welds fail.
