Looking for a pick up truck for towing use and general daily driving..

not too keen on l200's and navaras as have seen lots fail..

    2006 onwards so have been looking into;

    Ford ranger thunder 2.5td

    OR

    Hilux 2.4TD (newer shape)

    Budget upto £10k

anyone had any experience with these two? i know that the hilux will be generally reliable but is the 2.4 engine like the old ones which were common hg failures? i used to have a 3.0td surf and loved it albeit juicy...

the ranger looks nice but i know nothing about them or there engines..

    thanks

My dad has a ranger and regularly uses it for towing he has had no problems with it although he said they are supposed to have weak gearboxes causing them to slip out of gear while driving he has had his about 3 years now but didn't own it from new.

I had a 2006 ish ranger as a company truck when I worked in Mallorca and I was reasonably happy with it. It was good, but no better than the 1998 hilux crew cab I had in Holland.

Unless you get a posh one rangers ent got any power. Never had a hilux but the navara d40 is by far the best it drives like a car has good kit inside and will tow a much more than you ever are going to need ie it will pull a 7.5 horse box broken down out of a field no problem the only thing thats bad with them is if you work them it will eat the rear drive shafts but there is a new part upgrade. For 10 I bet you could get a later 190hp. One other note the autos are very thirsty.

i personaly love the navs BUT ive have seen too many of them fail post 06 but the ranger thunders i have heard nothing but good things about so far.... if the 2.5 tdci range is samge engine as the transit then they have decent pull and very good torque figure im sure

The hilux has a pretty pony towing capacity of 2.25 tonnes, rangers iirc are a fair bit more, im afraid i am in the navara camp ( the earlier shape) with there 3 tonne capacity aswell as a nice place to be

My uncle has had his hilux for a good couple of years and regularly tows 4 ton diggers and dump trucks (minus trailer weight) with it and has had no problems they are also quite nice places to be especially the invincible version but as you have said the problem is they are hard to come by sub 10k for the double cab

absolutley.. not many sub 100k miles are below 10k... hence the wildtrak... 2008 models with sub 80k can be had for 10k... look nice too

i know my uncles when he bought it had a little oer 100k on the clock but it still goes well and has nearly 200 k on it so it is a compromise cant comment on the fords as never had the pleasure of one but even the slightly less specy model hiluxs are ok

have you thought about a slightly older hilux or even a land cruiser (unless you speciffically want a pick up)

ive got a range sport so i dont want a normal 4x4, i just want a pick up and because the misses will also use it daily im wanting a good spec one... so must have leather or alcantara style interior and not look like a workman's truck basicly...

i will use it to tow the skid car with also

    ah i see

to be honest with you if you r planning to hang onto it for a decent length i would consider buying a lightly damaged one as tahts how my uncle buys the majority of his trucks the hilux was one of the only ones that he has bought in decent condition so if you have the time buy a lightly damaged one but there are risls associated with doing taht but equally you can get them cheap ish

    couple reasons mate..

    1. because we dont really need a £18k daily right now...
    2. cheaper daily but still nice to cruise around in to the shops and comfy
    3. want to tow and load up for skid days.. i wouldnt do it in a rr sport.
    4. I want an r35 gtr so ideally would like to px thr rr sport for one.. ;)
