So then, probably time I did another build thread seeing as the last car I built I never actually got round to doing one for... Long story short, to try and gain some financial stability after the skyline, I decided to step out of the game and build a car to eventually take to Matsuri and a couple other local events, and save some money along the way, so I bought a completely rot free, 100% solid s13 almost shell off mitch and set about building it over the space of around 6 months. It ended up looking like this... Then after a few last minute rushes to get the car ready for Drift Matsuri, literally the week/day/night before the event back in october of this year, and not having the time to actually road test the car, I took it to Drift Matsuri and me being completely cocky behind the wheel instead of taking it safe, I headed into the hairpin on my first lap, hitting the top end of third gear with a 4.3:1 ratio diff, but without a speedo so Im approximating 90mph +, i turn in expecting all glory to be among me, and well... the car didnt react the way I'm used to my cars reacting.. and it put me into the Armco Wall. Basically destroying all of the hard work I put into the car in the last 6 months, but luckily escaping all injury to myself thanks to a combination of a good secured seat, a good seatbelt, a rollcage, chassis bracing, a front crash bar, and a seam welded front section of the car.. bearing in mind i would have scrubbed off barely any speed on the grass, so still hitting the armco at 80mph. Needless to say. the car was scrap, but myself and majority of the parts were salvageable (Y) Undeterred by the experience, I went and got merry with all the folk there that I like to socialise with, and meeting a few others that Ill continue to be friends with so not a total loss to the weekend Next day I arranged to buy a local shell, which was 95% rot free, picked it up, welded it up, tubbed the front end, changed all my parts over. got it almost ready.. And then Mitch decided to sell his Onevia. This car has literally been so epic since I first lay eyes on it. I've wanted this more than I've ever wanted anything. So i HAD to try and get it. Now, funds were stupidly tight now I'd wasted half a year on 2 cars and got nowhere, so I made Mitch the best offer I could to try and secure the shell with a few select parts on it to try and make building it a little easier for me, and as sods law would have it - Mitch said yes. So I now own this: That came with no subframes whatsoever, so I had to shift the other shell on as a half roller, and swap parts over from 1 to the other, to get it home and looking like that ^ Now the plan was pretty simple. Build it up trying to honor some of its heritage but with current styling. Back in the day when the car was first used for drifting (circa 2004 I believe?) I was told it used to be Candy Apple Red. So I'm going to paint it, Candy BLOOD Red, for similarity. And because Mitch is one of the greatest guys I have the pleasure of knowing in the 'scene', and he was the first to build it as a Onevia - Its gonna stay Onevia as a thankyou to Mitch for letting me buy her, and to keep it in the DriftGarage family Then ofcourse, Drift it. ....Keep tuned
So, to carry this on, I began toying with idea's. What wheel sizes? 17's or 15's? love how thee look with 15's.. so I'll take a chance and try some on.. Didnt like it. Poor fitment and didnt flow with the kit. 15's is a NO. so threw the 17's on with some PCD adapters, and in the time I wasnt drifting, I started to import a few parts from Japan, mostly for myself, and partially to make a few quid on the side and bring in some sought after parts for others to buy at 'normal' prices.. and one of those purchases turned up the same week I got the Onevia home.. which were these beauts.. Trial fitted them with a bonnet I made, and with the 17's on. SCHWEEEEEEEEET. Only trouble is, I gained a team driver position with Automotive Workz, alongside DriftGarage and a few other companies, so now I have to use Sponsor wheels, and the Works VSKF have to be sold :'( shame, but they wont be used otherwise. Then this morning, I chucked the engine in So now all thats left is prop, rad, intercooler, various small amounts of wiring, exhaust, paint prep and paint. Should be done in no time! oh, and bleeding brakes, wheels. er.. and driving it. and alignment. Oh God.
I'm sorry to hear about the accident. Liking how this new car is going though. I actually liked the look of it with those 15's on. No idea what they were lol. I'm also looking forward to seeing the red paint, should be really nice then.
Cheers. And thanks to everyone else.. bit of an update with paint. Came across a problem that has put me back testing the mechanics are all ok by approx 2 weeks, and it needing to go back to drift garage to be fixed this weekend which will be for a few days. So it means I should hopefully be painting it at the end of this week just before it goes back, and candy being candy, theres no chance of me being able to paint it before its hopeful deadline of the 20th well enough for it to actually look good. So that may be done later next year. Instead ill be doing a decent fast paint job using 2k direct gloss paints. And I'm gonna keep it secret til it happens hehe Drift outlaws and Driftcup, money dependant on times of rounds - may not be able to do every round but ill try my damned hardest!!
Glad to see you've still got the motivation dude, I'd have almost certainly have called it a day for a few months after your Matsuri incident but you're no doubt committed! Hope to see the Onevia done soon. And for future reference, top of third with a 4.3 is about 70 odd haha (from experience of using mine with sat nav). With a 3.9 it's about 90 odd
Haha fair play Ali, whatever speed it was, it was flat out into that armco lol im still surprised I walked away from that without injury. Guess my time isn't up yet!
update. got most of the engine bits on and fitted, played with the alignment a little bit on the front and fitted the DW adjustable arms, and DW slip on spacers to accompany the hubs and rack and arms already modified (dont know why someone didnt fit the washers first?) then I played with panels, just cus fitted headlights and last few bits of engine and finished off the prep work, tidied the bootlid up a bit but not so its show worthy, lets face it, it will never be on a show and shine stand lol so yeah, just waiting on paint now!
if all the steering stuff is the lock mods that came with the car then you don't need the washers in the rack.
Always wondered that. I know more is always better, but if you're already getting better lock out of the existing steering throw, why reduce the thread engagement on the inners when you're loading them up even more? Guess they're easy enough to rip out at the track if you run into issues with binding etc.
Is this my old gear or something else? As Gaz says, it doesn't need big spacers as the longer tie rods are machined and there was as much lock on the car as you could need.
Yeah this is old gear, i know your new stuff doesn't need it if/when something gets damaged ill upgrade to the new stuff for ease.. which I already own from the black shell. Just using this cus it all came as a package deal The washer let's the rack end move further into the rack to give you the use of the redundant tooth on the steering rack. It's a common and very worth while modification.
Cheers Matt, I might give that a go. A washer on it to let it travel further into the rack you say? Sounds crazy but I'll give it a go if you reckon it will give me a bit more lock
