    E36 not self centering

    Hi guys,

My 36 touring is having some steering issues at the moment and want to see if anyone else has had this issue before because I can't find much on it!

I've replaced a steering pump with a new meyle one, fixed all steering leaks and fitted new standard top mounts.

It has e46 arms, driftworks hub adaptors etc...

The problem being that when either driving fast or slow the steering will not self center completely! If you're over 1/4 turn and let go it will center back only to about 1/4 turn then you have to turn it yourself straight and it does squeak a little when turning the steering wheel! The car isn't used very much at all and when it came back from the Isle of Man TT it must of sat for about two/three weeks then went for an mot which is when i found out instantly it wouldn't self center! I've never had this issue with the car before.. It's just come out of nowhere.. It go parked up working fine and then jump back in to it not working haha..

It's crap to drive because you're constantly correcting the car on the road because of how stiff the steering is which is abit sketchy at times!

Has anyone had this issue before? Drift matsuri is closing in and it's steering like crap! So need to get it sorted really.. Any help would be mucho appreciated :)

Sounds like the rack has crapped itself.

    Hi, thanks for the replys!

yeah I thought it may have been the rack but wasn't 100%

The engine mounts are spot on dude..

Does the rack seize up or something?

I had this problem in my compact. the alignment was out and the rack blew all it seals so wouldn't self centre. Just replaced it with a purple tag 067 coded one which is 3 turns lock to lock. Feel better driving about the yard but its a skid day next week so I'll let you know how it goes.

I once had this problem when I bodged an aftermarket wheel on my old daily using the wrong boss but that wouldn't self centre at all, dunno if that helps?

Sounds like your alignment is out, or try changing the fluid first.
