I have been facing a problem where my computer stuttered every 15 seconds left, and apps refused to respond. I am scared my HDD will also fail, and I already had a bad experience regarding this. If yours fails and you don't have backups, you can take it to a data recovery company that will charge from a few hundred to a thousand dollars. It would be lucky to have a friend who is good with computers to try to repair your filesystems and help with file carving. This usually works unless there's been serious physical damage. Hopefully, this won't happen!
