3 people I know in last 7 weeks have been given points and fine for runners by stretched tyres

So now I'm going to go full size

    Currently I'm running 225/40 on 18x10.5 rears and 205/40 on 18x9.5 fronts

My local tyre supplier is telling me I need to go with 285's and 255's. is this correct?

Will the 255's let me do a full lock on the front without touching? Altezza , standard, no extra drift spec steering upgrades

Put the 225 on the front more than enough for 9.5” and get some 245/255 for the rear.

While there is a perception that stretch isn't hurting anyone, or is the worst thing to be ever done, the black and white is as follows: If traffic want to pull you and do you and your tyres are found to be narrower than the approved spec, this is the reference document they will use when they do you under the Road Vehicles Construction & Use Regulation and Road Traffic Act.

Many people reference the Honda Civic Type R FK8 as having factory tyre stretch but the 245/30ZR20 are approved on 20x8.5.
