{} had this bad boy for a while now and its a great track day car! 2.0i 6 pot 5 speed manual, koni adjustable shocks koni lowering springs fully stripped interior roll cage cobaru bucket seats omp 4 point harnesses yoko tyres on bbs rims what bmw diff could i use for drifting, streight swap, or would it be better to just weld the diff? {}
use that! perfect! what diff has it now? open? weld it! send the suspension abit harder, and off you go
I'd weld it, my LSD was absolutely pants, couldn't make up its mind whether it wanted to lock or not. Other options would be a Kaaz 1.5 way (£800 iirc!) or getting an LSD rebuilt with added clutch plates and shimmed up to lock sooner, theres a few threads about it on E30 Zone - Uk's largest E30 community
3.64 or 3.91 LSD off the E30 Sports would do, expect to pay around 250 quid for them, or you can weld it and you get to put cool quotes in your sig like, i have a welded diff that haunts me while i sleep...
hi dex, its open diff at the moment, would welding it make it want to drift all the time? we still want to use it for track days , so should i go for an lsd?
If you don't fancy paying £250 for a 20 year old LSD, I'm sure I read somewhere that the internals from the E34 5 series LSD are the same, and you can swap them into the E30 casing (could be wrong though, and can't remember where I saw it). Also I have an open diff from a 318i Touring if you want it as a spare to weld, think its 4.10 ratio...
two sheds the spare diff may be a good idea to weld up, i have never looked at taking out the diff, is it just slide the half shafts out remove the cover and pop it out???
I can't quite remember! Think theres 4 big bolts holding it onto the subframe, 4 connecting it to the prop and 6 for each driveshaft flange...
It's 4 bolts to the subframe, one through a bushing attached to the main body of the car. With 6 on both halfshafts and the driveshaft. Apparently the propshaft and diff have marks which need to be aligned once you offer up the new diff or it throws the balancing out.
If you still want to do track days you may be better off just buying a tight LSD. A welded diff will make the handling deteriorate a fair bit - the front end will just be forced to push on more than it before as the rear end won't want to change direction as much. My mate Sean has an LSD in good condition, and to be fair it locks like a beaut. 2 wheel smokey burnouts, donuts, sideways out of junctions all in the dry no problem. I still prefer the welded diff but when I drove his car in the wet iirc I didn't honestly notice much difference. It's just knowing what diff is good and what diff is fucked as most people won't have any way of proving to you what they are selling is good.
in the wet bmw lsds are ok but in the dry and with more power they are utter crap....get a welder or get the current one modified.. u can make it a 4 plate and change the ramp angles and it will improve but still not be as good as a kaaz or similar
Yeh but he stills want it as a track car, i think the better idea would be to get another diff, weld that use it for drift then stick the open one back in for track.
