Either R1 or ZX9R carbs will be fine. Just change the jets to suit. Costs about £3 each for new jets.

If it's your daily driver and you need the car to get to work etc I would advise getting a few days off as fitting them is easy, making them reliable is not. Mate of mine just fitted some ZX9R carbs to his MK2 Golf and weeks later they're still not 100%. For the first week we had to tow it and bump it to even get it started until he got the correct jets and the fuel pressure sorted. Now because the carbs are not spaced to suit the inlet manifold correctly the hoses suck off at 1 and 4 everyday. He literally has to refit them every time he uses the car. Not much fun when it's 0 degrees outside.

    Sounds mighty though. :smokin:

sounds like he needs either a decent manifold or to re-space the carbs:nod:

and ONLY the mighty sounds mighty;):p

You're going to need to mess with the jetting regardless of what ones you use, but I'd go for the R1 carbs. I used them on my 2.0 redtop Vaux lump and they were bitchin'

My jets just got drilled out though, not replaced.

Have used R6 carbs with great success on a few 1.6 106s.. Currently running a set on a gti and have now got 10,000 miles and a trackday under their belt. still havent got round to rolling roading it yet.. Jetted it by drilling out the mains and sealing up the air jets (based on what I had set a 8v using the same setup). Ask anyone who has heard/been in it what it goes/sounds like :smokin::smokin:

U can solve the rubbers falling off by using superglue/epoxy before you do the jubilee clips up.. Can withstand mega jumps and abuse then:thumbs:

I used to autograss a little and R1 carbs onto the vauxhall was very popular.

That looks spot on. Same problem as my mate has, manifold is too wide for the carbs. Unfortunately he has just lost his job so cash is the problem at the moment. Just needs the same thing, cutting, angling and rewelding 1 and 4.

The Stig; The mighty is mighty, whereas the Golf just sounds mighty. :smash:

    Mighty. :smokin:

how fun it is to setup a bike carb to a car engine, can be a pain in the arse, dependin on what carb u got.
id rather stick with car carbs haha

    gotta stay simple

Hmm it's a small task compared to Webers or Delortos etc though. Much simpler and nicer to work on a set of modern bike carbs, and they stay in tune instead of needing constant attention.

Might be a bit of a pain on an MX5 because of how the ECU controls the ignition etc.

I used this: HM-ITB as a guide when I fitted bike throttle bodies to a H22 Prelude.

This will only work with Map based ecus not AFM.

Yeah that's the trouble, the standard MX5 management uses an AFM

thats for fuelling only , so would be redundant. It uses crank sensors etc for ignition , correct me if i'm wrong.

Yeah you should be good with just leaving the crank sensor alone.
