Right ive got the chance to get my hands on a 1.4 340 fairly cheap so am considering it as a little rat to play with. Question is how does the 1.4 skid?? Im talking totally stripped , lowering blocks / land rover shocks etc and of course a welded diff. Let me know what their like ASAP so i can give the guy a yey or nay. Cheers guys
You'll get it to step out in the dry with lots of commitment but theres little chance of holding it there for any length of time. Pump up the rear tyres and pray for rain and you'll have no problems Andy
If its an early model with a 4 speed box there alright. Will go all day in the wet but need commitment in the dry. The 4 speed box makes a big difference compared to the 5 speed which are slow as anything
Lol fair play, guess with a reply like that ill throw the idea out the window lol. So what would you guys suggest 1.7 or 2lt?? Gotta be much cheapness tho coz im still plowing money in to the Silvia lol
I know people that have bought them thinking it will be a "cool" idea and sadly sold it on as quickly as they could. lol
I'm afraid that will be a 5 speed. so stay well clear. The 1.7's are the best to go for if your not thinking of doing many upgrades but the 2.0 can be easilly swapped for a 2.3 turbo
I have a 1.4 and you can forget about skidding in the dry, it'll go in the wet but i'd go for the 2ltr personally
How is the 5 speed slower? The ratios are idenical for both just that the 5 speed has got an extra gear. The difference however is the diff. The 4 speed has got a longer ratio and the 5 has got a shorter ratio. This means the 5 speed has got more gears that are closer together which makes the most of the little power the 1.4 has....
Ey up mate, I dint realise it was the ratios in the diff. My mate has a 4 speed and bought a 5 speed for spares, and it was awfully slow compared to the 4 speed and dint skid atall.
Ahh I see, he might have got himself a 1.7 5 speed. The gearbox themselves are identical but the diff is the longer one - the same used in the 4 speed 1.4 box - but then this would have made the first 4 gears the same as the 1.4 box so I'm stumped as to how it was any different with the exception of an extra cog.
no they are both definately 1.4's. but the 1.4 5 speed was so much slower than his 4 speed. he got this other car because he was going to use the 5 speed on his. but after driving it he hated it
Odd! Only thoughts are the car with the 5 speed was a bit ill (or your mates 4 speed 1.4 was a good one!)
