hi, thinking of trying to get my own drifter for next year after driving one for the day ( thanks drift one) and going to watch a few times, i am on a real tight budget, will be using it at oulton and maybe buxton, was thinking somthing along the lines of volvo 340/360/240, or bmw 316/318, as my insurance is high , would they do as i know oultons slipy, any help welcome thanks
You don't need much power for Oulton, we've got guys coming regularly with 318 / 320 BMWs and they're fine. Better with the diff welded of course. In your shoes this is probably the route I would take. You could also start developing the car ie making it how you want it with a view to fitting a bigger motor in time. Buxton is ok with low power, you have to work harder but if you learn this way you will find it easy when you get some power. John
not planing on tunning it to be honist, just weld diff and suspention ect, would just be for fun and to learn in, then if i still like it and get better at driving then get somthing better,i have a soft spot for r32s bmws are loads easyer to get secondhand bits for though, so would be beter for me probly
from the sounds of it yours prob quite young like me, my first drifter was an s13 which is a perfect base as mine only cost £700 with 70 odd miles on it and 100% standard, but the insurance and petrol is very high (im 20 cost me over £1000 about 8 months ago) ive now just taken my s13 off the road and have bought a 318, when i swapped the insurance over i got a massive £8 back.... IMO the 318 is far too under powered for the weight unless theirs some moist stuff on the floor but thats maybe cause the open diff makes things rly difficult or i was just spoilt with a stage 2 s13.
I've just turned 24 (5mins ago lol) and i only pay £750 a year on my E36 318is and thats with 9 points declared so insurance isnt bad on BMW, had S13 last year and cost me £2400. just find something cheap and drive it round for abit untill you can get decent insurance on something with a turbo
my mates a lucky bugger, hes got a 328 coupe, hes about 21/22 and he said hes got his insurace down to £700, its about that on a 1.4 polo for me lol
When I was 21, most good cars were between 800 - 1400 to insure, not too bad really. Just get an e30 318i 4dr and smash it to pieces. I say 4dr because they are a fraction of the price, and I say smash it because they are hideous things. In cr33ch's opinion a 318i has no power, in my opinion he's wrong. In an e30 they are great, in an e36 they are less great. Just use 185/60/14s pumped up to 60psi and a welded diff and you'll be laughing all the way into the barrier. If you're unsure just collar me as I instruct at the Drift One events and am a self-proclaimed expert of underpowered cars lol.
I'm 21 with 3 years no claims, waiting till i'm 22 in 3 months to get an s14a and my insurance is still predicted to be 1500
well maybe i was alittle harsh, its not that underpowered but the open diff make it very difficult, though i had such a laugh in the snow so glad i kept RWD. i think ill just stop being a wimp and cut the springs + weld the diff.
My insurance was £680 including breakdown cover on an E30 318i, welded diff, stripped interior, alloys, bucket seat and harness, exhaust mod cat-back, and I even declared the fact that someone had de-locked the doors. I'm 21, 1 years NCB with Adrian Flux. Even I thought that was a damn good price! It can be done dude, although I'd get a 325 if I was upgrading atm. (nowt wrong with a 4dr, it means you can fit fixed back bucket seats and still get wheels/tyres in the back really easily - win win IMO!)
definately go for a BMW i had a 340 for a while and was a nightmare! i now have a m3 and its perfect! 325's are just as good with a welded diff though
