So today was the big day. The day that i finally collected the car and brought it home. I'm actually speechless, this thing is a beast. It has scared me shitless. I drove it home with unbalanced wheels and the alignment out so it went to Nispro en route home to get everything straight and set up for fast track/drift use. Walton had a drive of the car and was very impressed, its amazing how much harder a good driver pushes a car than you ever could. It spins the wheels up so easily but still has good usable grip. There are still a few niggles like the arches rub, more so now that the camber on the front has been reduced and Castor increased. We twisted the top mounts to give more castor as well. It needs a firewall quick time, the fumes from the fuel system are pretty noxious. Apart from some other small minor things i love it. Will try and get some pics and videos up shortly of it in action.
Ben sure thing. Just running it hard a few weeks and it goes to pod on the 9th Nov. Then a few bodywork things to tidy up then i'll be on the blower
kam just waiting for it to be dry, its been wet everyday so i dont really go anywhere just spin the wheels up in all gears
So i've had the car back for about 3-4 weeks now and i fucking love it. The power, response and drive ability are just awesome. The only niggle i have had is an occasional knock from the rear end so took it over to Julian to investigate and looks to be rear subframe related (i've already done the re-reinforcement plates) so nothing major to worry about probably needs polybushing. Anyway Ben 'Bon' Smith was at the garage so i asked him if he wanted to take it for a drive, he was hesitant at first saying he'd probably break something. He took it for a ride with me shotgun and loved every second of it. We came up to a roundabout on the way back and it had to happen, 2nd gear drift, full lock looking out of the side windows. Shift to 3rd and BANG, the gearbox went bye bye. I'm so glad it has happened before a drift day as i can now replace it for something stronger. A ZF box will be going in now ready for Santa Pod on the 9th Nov. Can everyone a dig at Bon
Shaan the smile on my face when i drive it is brilliant. Both Julian and Walton Smith have been very impressed with the build.
Yep glad it happened now and not on a drift day. This reinforces my decision. To keep the BMW engine and not transplant in something more expensive. A replacement ZF box from a 328 is about 70 quid
What box did it have? 325? Break Break Broke-Smith. He did THE most horrendous clutch side-step on Phil's door in my S14 in Germany once, about a 2MPH drift and just dumped it off the limiter in 2nd, god know how the drivetrain survived, it made the most hideous BANG I've ever heard. Still makes me laugh when I think about it.
Glad to see your happy, though who wouldn't be! Replacement boxes are like £50 or so anyway so no bother there.
Dude I have a ZF box out of a 3.0 M3 in my shed with M3 short shifter linkage. It's only in Denham near Uxbridge, only up the road if you're in Hilingdon.
