Ok, been a while since I was last here with my SCd MX5, but the time has come for the next project. So the car has been bought, an E36 BMW compact, which looks interesting however its gutless!

So the goal is to do a 328 transplant.... I have a friend that will help with doing the work and has most of the tools - he has done a lot of engine out/in work but on Alfas and Escorts.

    My questions:-

Where is best to find the parts for the transplant?
Does anyone have the complete list?
Does anyone have the steps required?
Are there any special tools required to do the job?

    Thanks in advance!

Im in the process of doing the same to mine.

I have brought a 318i coupe which as already had a 6pot swap as a donor car

So a far as im aware for the compact its similar as the video you posted but with a few differences.

    You will need.

    Engine
    Box
    Ecu
    Loom
    Spot front prop half
6pot down pipe and exhaust (exhaust will need to be shortened)
    Ews bits.
6 pot front arb to clear the sump
    6pot clocks
And a few engine bits like ps lines

Depending on what year your compact it is depends on how easy or difficult it will be

    For me mines a 1999 318ti with the 1.9 engine and ews 3 :(

The easy part will be the swap itself but for me having ews 3 means getting the ecu ews deleted or i will get no spark and then swapping some wires on the loom to get stuff like water temp guage and rev counter to work.

    Good luck with the swap

    Thanks

well mine is the 316i very limited spec :) R plate. The donor car has now been bought, its a complete E46 328 touring (has 72k miles on it but lots of rust in not nice places) with an auto box.

    We have a few questions:-
Do we have to do anything with the gear linkage? Idea is to keep the 316 5 speed box
What clutch do I need to buy? E46?
What hose size is required to bleed the E46 brakes?
Where are the ECUs for both cars? Not near them, so cannot go outside and check...
Anything I should be changing while the engine is out? So far we have flywheel bolts, engine and gearbox mounts... oil, coolant and gearbox oil of course as well.

you will need the 6 pot gear linkage otherwise the the shifter will not be central.
e46 engine is a different kettle of fish entirely and wont be plug and play like a 6 pot m50/m52 you will need to do a lot more wiring work.

not sure about the e46 but in the e36 the ecu is near the firewall on the passenger side
