Someone I know just sold his 'broken' for £900. Lost £6000 since buying it and fixing it once for it to fail again. Now to me £900 is very cheap. How much could you get a car like this on the road for with an engine swap or engine rebuild ? Can someone elaborate on running oil premix ? Is there a good running guide with respect to start up/flooding/hot start procedures to prolong the engine ?
Not sure if this is in any way directed at me Col matey, but I rarely trust anything unless I have first hand experience (i.e. tearing down the many rx8 failures) and referenced research (usually Mazda own papers, not rx7/8club lol) Agree about the horror stories, a LOT of them about, nearly all through the fault of the user though. I do throw my hands up and say I am guilty of exaggerating a point to get the importance of proper maintenance across though.
How did it fail, first and second time? There's plenty of advice if you join a rotary engine/RX owners club. Premix is just a burnable oil you chuck in with the petrol when you fill up, It gets injected into the combustion chamber with the fuel and helps lubricate the moving metal parts, reducing wear, and helping prolong the seal life.
not at all dude, you know more than most the longevity some of us get out of rotary engines running decent power makes me giggle when you mention the word rotary on a forum how many internet specialists pipe up because they heard it down the pub, read it on rx7 club or got fed shit by certain tuners claiming to be god. im not surprised people want to throw boingers in rotary powered cars, there are alot more tuners and people who actually know what they are doing compared to the very select few who do with rotaries in this country. the jz conversion looks very interesting indeed
I see no reason why you can't get do a complete conversion for £5000? There's loads of options out there, it's just deciding on what you want to do? How about a Saab 2.0 or 2.3 Turbo? Or Vauxhall C20/Z20 LET? Or a Volvo engine? Loads of options out there!!! As regards the Rotary reliability well I do not know much about them to be honest however I do sell car parts for a living and frequently use the website 1st choice spares where people put out parts requests and can assure you that there are constantly lots of requests for RX8 Engines!
Dont worry about it now chaps, cheers for all the info but after reading all your answers and also having a chat with TJZ engineering I've decided (as suggested to me on the first page lol) to just buy a different car thats more up to the job, cheers anyway
As cool and awesome as PP's are, theres a time and a place. The stock ports on the rx8 are awesome, its pretty much the ports that allow it to produce 230 bhp on effectively the same engine as the the N/A rx7 which only produces 160bhp, and the rx8 engine actually has more low down torque! running a PP will throw all of that out the window. You'll have 300 bhp, but you wont have reasonable torque to go with it
I'm currently building an SR20 RX8 track car but I was thinking of buying another for the road and would want to do a conversion on that also, one thing that is a balls is the wiring, anyone recommend someone who could do it so that all the original clocks dash worked the same ? A 20vt from a vag using the 6speed from the RX8 sounds very interesting !
I'd love to bolt in the IS350 v6 and give that a bit of a tune up. 300+ NA horse power and a nice and light engine. Very expensive and a ball ache for electronics though!
Kruizer, how much hassle was fitting the SR20 and box to your RX8? Did you have to do much to the front subframe, suspension and steering?
Mazda RX8 project with 20v Audi turbo engine - PassionFord Duratec's bolt up as well so you've got the option of the 2.3 turbo's in the mps models
Well seeing as I now own Robbo's RX8, i figured I'd stop by this thread as although the 13B is running strong (if not a bit thirsty) the eventual plan is to 1jz the car so this info is pretty valuable.
