a mate has just fitted a set of 4 extra lights above the windscreen on his land rover defender. but has no idea if they r legal or not?
they r wired so that they can be activated with the high beam flash, or with a seperate switch on there own, or with the dipped beam.
any1 have any knowledge on this?
    any help much appriceated.

Yeah I think lights like that are ok, but stupid stuff like strobe lights and neons aren't?

i think it would only be an issue if they came on with dipped beam and having the potential to blind other drivers, yours doesnt so it will be ok

they will be fine as long as they aren't wirerd into the dipped as dipped beam needs to be set to a certain pattern for mot, where as driving lights/full beam dont have a pattern.

Yea thats leagal, it states in the book only extra(non standard) indication lights (i.e addition brake lights/indicators or marker lights) must be in working order if fitted. Or some thing like that, but its been 6-7 years since i worked in mot place. Spot lamps are prety free from what i remember.

when i had my discovery i ran with 4 on the bumper and 4 on the roof, all wired to work with main beam, and had a swith to stop them flashing at the same time.

    never had any issues :)

i think they are legal as long as they are only wired an look like side lights, if you know what i mean. they are illegal for a main beam.

neons i thought were legal as long as the bulb couldnt be seen at the rear!

perfectly fine so long as they don't come on with dipped beam, X-Trails came with optional lamps in the end of the roofbars. So long as you don't drive towards people with them on its fine:)

This is unless you're truck driving weirdo, then you have to buy 16 super expensive Hella lamps, but only put 5w bulbs in so you can use them all the time on the motorway, cooooool.
