I painted the damage on my rear qtr over the weekend, but using Halfords ironically named colour match means I now need to do the whole car with the same paint :wack:

So I might aswell go for a colour change. But how many rattle cans should I order to paint the whole car? I know a fair few people on here have done it with various colours :)

I used, IIRC, about 10x 500ml cans on my e30 just external surfaces. That was for a few coats too. Halfords paint is rape though at circa £7 per can, I buy mine from my local trade supplier midland car parts who charge £2 a can (probs about £3 a can without discount).

    Cheers Mike

I only bought the stuff from Halfords as I thought it'd be easier to get a match :wack:

Found a place on ebay that does cans for under £3 for 500ML, and discount on p&p, so probably gonna go with them :)

Mike that would be black paint for that money. I get mine for the same price but if you want any other colour it will cost anything between 7-12GBP. Size of the can is also important. Those for 7GBP in Halfords are probably 300ml. I spoke to my local paint store about mixing paint for me and putting it in aerosol cans and he quoted me like 100GBP and I get about 15 cans out of it.

It always seems borrowed compressor and 3 liters of 100GBP paint a better cheaper option.

Erm, no Daddy D, I am fairly sure I know what colour and paint I bought. My local motor factor prices are around £1.80 for a 500ml can of the basic trade paints in black, satin black, matt black, white etc, then £2 ish a can (no more than £2.50 I don't remember the exact figure) for any of the tetrosyl range. It's not colour match stuff but I have posh metallic grey and there are loads of paint colours available.

    I guess I must have a good supplier :)

we did an S12 with 8 500ml cans from hell-frauds. Helps to keep the cans in a hot bucket of water before use. This helps atomisation of the paint.

EDIT - Im with mike too, trago spec colours are similar price. Yet 300ml.. but still under £2 a can :)

It would take about 10 I'd say... but probably best to get a decent nozzle too, some have better spray patterns but contrary to common misconception... u can get a decent finish with cans, as long as u prep meticulously, flat down & polish up properly... albeit depending on the type of paint u buy it will most likely not dry hard (stone chip easily) & also not buff up to as deep a shine as say 2k sprayed using a gun & compressor (with appropriate safety gear)... If you could borrow a setup the paint for an S13 would probably be circa 2L for the same colour respray or a tad bit more for a colour change... It will set u back circa £45 as well as being catalyst dried, harder & shinier!

    Cheers, Nick.

You definitely got a good suplier. Mine can only get the tetrosyl or trade cans in primer and black (satin, gloss, matt) but any other colours have to be mixed and matched. Maybe that is why he charges me a lot more and I find Halfords cheaper. Can I get a link from somebody that sells the trade spray in colours like yellow, green, red etc...? Might have to shop online from now on.

One question, when you buy spray paint does it come always in one version or do you choose between 2pac, oil based, some other nonsense I can't remember? If so what is the difference between them?

Spray cans would 99% be cellulose AFAIK, other stuff is trade only I beleive.

Midland Car Parts, Parcel Terrace, Derby. They are my supplier I'm sure they must run through a common source to get the paint, they are just a generic large trade motor factor.
