Just spent the past 25-30 minutes reading through this thread bud! Really good and love your progress! Im getting a garage built on my drive next year and plan on taking my mk1 off the road and totally stripping it down to basically a bare shell and re-building it! Love it mate! good luck with the rust.
Thanks dude, not started yet, got a small oil leak to sort. Welding will be all day tomorrow an Monday
Finally managed to start sorting the grot out today, forgot how much there was...! Chopped the outer sill off, was a bitch to remove with all the hidden spot welds I kept finding... Inner Sills were only covered in surface rust but still needed some patches on the underside. Rear sill and floor were the hardest hit as yo can see by the amount of patching and floor rebuilding That's all for now, just need to tidy up the sill ends and then get the new outer panels, which will hopefully be tomorrow
Are you going to put any sort of seam sealer on after the welds have been ground down? Not saying your welding is bad, but sometimes when ive welded I get holes and some which you cant see untill you look really close. So something to seal the tiny areas that could trap moisture. Or do you reckon spraying it would stop it from oxidising the metal. Just wanting to know in general, and am not attacking the hard work youve put in.
Finally managed to press on and get some more welding done, seems to be a slow process though... My mate popped over to give us a chuck for a couple of hours so we got cracking, Got the new sill trimmed here and there and offered it up, was perfect, Welded up and threw some primer on just in time for it to rain... Will have to invest in a gazebo as the rain forced me to pack up n call it so never even got a chance to clean up the welds.
Today we finished off the passenger sill and arch repairs. I've decided to set a deadline to get it on the road so aiming for the new year. Rear lower arch/sill done Painted, seam sealed and stone chipped ready for the waxoyl, Ground the welds back and fully stone chipped the sill, also applied some Dinitrol cavity wax to the sill inners so should last a few more years yet! Just needs some paint to finish now, will be making a start on the other side next week
So as the welding etc is drawing to a close and MOT is looming, i am looking into more power as a project for next year. Currently looking into an old school setup using a set of Bike Carbs, full exhaust system with manifold, Stage 2 Kelford Cams and Valve springs & Gas Flowed Head. My mate may have a set of 38mm Mikuni Carbs, if they are ok? Anyone on here using a similar setup? I know its not gonna give big powers like a turbo but i actually prefer the NA power setup...
