whilst on my travels i spotted an s15 spec R shell advertised, wound up doing a deal late friday night over the phone without even seeing a picture of it picked the car up on saturday,we had to selotape the panels on and wedge the rest of it inside the car, found out it was silver then has been painted blue at some point pretty scary having sam driving the truck knowing your bonnet it selotaped on!! dumped it off at the unit at some disgusting hour and left it till monday to discover what i had bought. pics of the stuff wedged in the boot. all the nuts and bolts are labeled which is a result
put it in the corner of the workshop for a few weeks whilst i decided what to do with it and had some free time. got it on the ramp this weekend and popped the subframes off. found the rear subframe bushes were knackered. mannaged to pull 2 of the metal inserts out with my fingers. not bad for a 60km car. so set fire to them in disgust. spent the entire of saturday wire wheeling off bits of underbody surface rust. the damn thing had been undersealed aswell. only found 1 small bit where it has rusted through, so stuck a plate over it whipped out the battery tray and airbox brackets and started welding up the million random holes that arent needed any more.
popped over to collect a s13 shell off sileighty dave.had a look around and bought a few bits off him.popped them in the boot of the s13. hahaha, sorry mr new brown car owner. stopped about 10 miles down the road to check my load was ok and found a drive shaft had come off and was sat on the bed of the truck. oops dont think im a good enough driver to rock a 4age mr tony.
yeah, dave is a sound guy, be a shame to see him go. after what seems like a lifetime of grinding welding sanding/primer and more sanding i was able to lay some colour in the engine bay. went with grey again as im not sure what im going to be doing wth the outside paint yet. whilst i was at it i seam sealed the entire underside of the car then etch primed and painted over the surface rust bits i had ground off and treated.give it a day or two and i will blast it with underseal, yuck waiting on the subframe bushes and r33 handbrake cables to arrive in the post before i can put it back on the floor.
Hehe, you're getting on with it quickly mate. It was weird seeing you drive off with that on your truck after being in my garage for 5 years I agree though, hardly any rust. As for the underseal, I had that done when I put it through the ESVA test after coming into the country. Good luck with it mate. looking forward to seeing it on the road. I'm still trying to get used to my GTR. I have jelly legs when I get out of it.
had a bit more time to work on this, picked up some r32 gtr calipers and a master cylinder to handle stopping,so i got some s13 rear handbrake mechanisms out the stores, stripped them down drilled off the backing plates. being off a crappy uk spec car they were pretty rusty so quick sand blast and a coat of chassis black had them back upto spec. bought some blueprint r33 handbrake cables and fitted them onto the s15 uprights. the rear traction arm have these wacky bolts, anyone care to tell me why? and what they do?
Looks like it could be a good project! I shall be watching. Those bolts look like mass dampers, probably there to reduce tire or driveline vibrations and noise into the cabin so you should be fine swapping them for standard bolts. Brad =)
