I'm going to be bold and say that what passes for mainstream rap/hip hop currently is a fucking embaressment, but older stuff works alright.

Bang on the money! You really do have to go hunting for good gear these days. Same with anything suppose Dilated Peoples, krs-one, jungle brothers,Wu-tang, outkast (any up to and including stankonia, B.O.B!), Cypress hill, Early busta ryhmes stuff. Would always try to find a 'future hiphop' compilation and give it a listen, most of it will be complete gack but you find the odd one that's worth a listen, qwel & kip killagain aren't bad.

just find them on youtube (its suprising how much decent music is actually on there) copy the net address - click on reply on a post -> the little world icon on the toolbar on the bit where you write a message and then paste into the box that pops up = hey presto musc video in your post! spam away!
