A couple more pics from Silverstone..

Last night I gave it a little check over for RDC round 4 this weekend. One of the main jobs was to fix the boost leak that it had developed.

It was leaking at the join between the compressor and the intercooler hardpipe. The hardpipe had snapped a stud from it's flange. I will repair it for now and if there are any future problems I will cut the hardpipe down and add a small silicone joiner to isolate it a bit better.

Which in turn allowed the gasket to blow out

I didnt have a spare and I wont have chance to get one before the weekend so I improvised. It is a metal gasket, layered with rubber so not something too easy to come accross. Luckily, the gasket between the 2 halves of an S14 inlet manifold has a very similar diameter. I had a couple spare so chopped one up to make the new gasket.

    The empty hole..

The stud (which was a bolt welded in) was drilled out and tapped. I then fitted a new stud and with the pikey gasket, bolted it all back together again..

A few other nuts and bolts needed tweaking up but overall it is in a pretty good state. I just have a few tyres to get fitted today, fill it with fuel and it is about ready to go :)

I did allot of looking at your thread with the Evo turbo. I really like your KP! I am very impressed with how the Evo turbo holds the power untill the redline, where the T28 just dies off. I need to look at ECUs next to really make the most of it.

Update coming from RDC round 4 at Birmingham wheels.........

just go nistune. every man and his dog tunes them and you can usually pick one up and have it mapped for less than the cost of a power FC.

Think I might end up with nistune tbh. Although, it would be nice to get rid of the MAF, so still looking at other options aswell.

Looks like quite a cool setup

RDC Round 4 – Birmingham wheels

Was at Birmingham wheels this Sat for round 4 of the Retro drift challenge. The car got an absolute beating and had a few issues.

The first was a power loss issue that felt like fuel surge. It had lots of fuel in it so I drained the tank to investigate. Got a few bits of crap out and that seemed to solve it.

The next problem was a cracked manifold. I caught the downpipe pretty bad when getting the car off the trailer so think that put a big load on the turbo. It started off as a small crack and grew throughout the day, causing the boost to be quite late. Got around it with lots of clutch kicks!

The track layout was pretty awesome. It was the same used for JDM Allstars. From the start line you use the first corner to build up your speed in 2nd then fire it through the cut-through diagonally and grab 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] towards the wall and clip 1. You then hold a high line to get to clip 2 on the exit. A quick flick on the straight and you then come into clip 3 against the wall. Again, going for the outside line sees you end up on clip 4, then you carry on the drift round until you cross the finish line.

The key to a good run was the first clip and from a driving point of view, that was the most exciting. You had to go in as fast as possible to end up on the wide line which was pretty fun.

Here’s a vid of one of my practice runs…

In qualifying, we got 2 runs. I managed to qualify 1[SUP]st. [/SUP] I got through some cool battles and into the final. Unfortunately a water hose split, dumping all the coolant out. It was one of the wanky ones under the inlet manifold so no hope of fixing it trackside.. As a result, I had to forfeit the battle and settle for 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] place.

    Some pics…

¼ panel needs a bit more love now!

I was trying some new tyres as well. Some 195/50 r13 trailer tyres! Turns out they are pretty good. From a grip point of view they are nothing special but due to the fact they are so rigid, they felt very nice to drive on and wore very consistently.

I now have a list of things to fix for next time out…

-Weld up manifold (whilst it is off it will be getting some mods)
-Bash out ¼ panel (so I can fit another rear light)
-Fix coolant leak (think it is a split pipe in the rats nest under the inlet manifold)
    -Drain and clean fuel system

Next event 27[SUP]th[/SUP] September for the final round of the RDC at Pembrey

    Cheers guys!

Another cool shot from round 4…. Lined up with Barry's awesome V8 KE70 smoke machine

And also this screen grab of some video footage. Spitting some pretty good flames from the exhaust and screamer!

Should have a bit of time at the end of this week to crack on with taking the manifolds off and fixing the water leak and exhaust leak.

    Cheers

    Hi James,

Engine mounts are still fine despite a few years of massive abuse and a big crash which bent the chassis
