Some of you will already know about the original Drift Moto AE86 with its tuned Vauxhall XE engine, but for the 2010 JDM AllStars series, we’ve decided to do something slightly different to raise the bar and bring the standard up another level. The Corolla has been stripped and fully rebuilt with a few special additions.
We’ve been flat out on her since the end of last year, and our hopes are to have her finished and out for the JDM media day at the end of the month, so fingers crossed we can get her finished and mapped in the time we have left.
Here is what we started with, our original white AE86 from last season with the 2.0 litre XE:

First job was to strip the entire front end and cut out the firewall in preparation for the new engine and gearbox combo:

Then it was onto test fitting the new engine/gearbox configuration with a mocked up block:

Once that was done we were able to finalise its positioning and begin to fabricate the engine mounts:

That was swiftly followed by the same job with the gearbox mounts:

With the mounts completed we were able to reinstall the mock engine to check positioning. We were very keen to keep all the main masses as close to the middle of the car as possible to help change of direction. In relation to the engine, this resulted in the 2nd cylinder from the front being directly in line with the front axle line, the pictures speak for themselves:

Sorry for the lack of engine pics, but we wanted to keep some things reasonably quiet until it's closer to finished.

next, the modified chassis rails and firewall :)

So with the engine fitted, we were able to get an idea of any clearance issues, and after a lot of careful consideration it was decided we needed to modify the chassis legs to give the exhaust manifold a bit more room, this was mainly to aid cooling but has the added benefit of making it easier to work on.

First, we cut the corner of the legs off and made up sheet steel panels to replace them. Here they are during checking of fitment.

Once that was done they were tacked into place.

All was good, so the welding was finished.

A lot of grinding and elbow grease later and the uneducated could be fooled into thinking it was never even modified :D

Tomorrow, the saga of the firewall :D
